What You Will Do

Patient Care

Prepares the necessary information (i.e. lab and procedural results), equipment and supplies for exam.

Assists physicians with procedure setups, patient procedures and examinations.

Performs patient care, including vital signs, weights, rooming, assisting with procedures, medication administration (vaccinations) and injections and other necessary tests.

Administers medication following approved procedures and only after checking medication and dose with a licensed person.

Processes requests for prescription refills according to established practice.

As required, performs waived testing (urine dipstick, urine pregnancy test, blood glucose testing), performs EKGs, and administers immunizations.

Collects and sends specimens to appropriate labs for testing per protocol.

Assists the physician with maintaining preventive health measures for a panel of patients.

Promptly and accurately reports and refers patient concerns and symptoms, reactions, changes (appropriate to age) to licensed clinic personnel.

Scheduling

Schedules and edits and maintains patient physician appointments for new and returning patients, using the scheduling system; schedules radiology appointments.

Customer Service

Maintains clean and orderly exam rooms, hallways and work areas; responds to inquiries from patients, relatives and/or referring physicians with accurate information in a timely fashion.

Acts as a patient advocate, coordinator and liaison for Stanford Health Care in dealing with the community.

Acts as non-clinical liaison/concierge
avigator for referred patients before, during, or after an encounter with a Stanford medical facility.

Clerical Duties

Informs patient authorization and collects payment for new and returning patients using the scheduling system; collects patient demographic and insurance data and enters into systems; assigns medical record numbers.

Assures appropriate verifications and authorizations are complete before patient sees provider.

Assists with all messaging from the patient to the physician in a timely manner.

Other: Coordinates with SHC Special Patient Services.

Level of Supervision: Continue training, receiving detailed instructions in new or specialty areas and work under the general supervision of experienced Clinical Assistant/Medical Assistant. Assignments are selected to provide increased complexity and variety within the specialty area. Work is reviewed for accuracy and completeness.

Customer Support & Interaction: Limited client interaction.

Education Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Medical Assistant Certificate/Diploma from an approved school/institution or equivalent documented training

Experience Qualifications

1–5 years of directly related experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of and ability to use and apply medical terminology in performing duties.

Knowledge of coding and billing regulations.

Knowledge of computer systems and software used in the functional area.

Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.

Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.

Demonstrated customer service skills in interactions with patients, families and staff, including high-volume and stressful situations.

Ability to work independently as well as part of the patient care team.

Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures.

Familiarity with home health, practice care coordination, and clinical care skills.

Business communication skills including clear writing with proper grammar and syntax; ability to write concise clinical reports.

Ability to learn and update clinical knowledge regularly (HealthStream, continuing education, etc.).

Understanding of population health concepts and related inventory and service concepts.

Basic knowledge of health care theories and concepts.

Proficiency in MS Office Suite, databases, and healthcare systems.

Licenses and Certifications

BLS – Basic Life Support required

CMA – Certified or Registered Medical Assistant preferred

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

Frequent desk-based computer tasks; mostly sedentary with occasional standing/walking.

Lift/carry/push/pull up to 10 pounds; occasional bending or squatting.

Work is performed in an office setting that is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.

Compensation
Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $33.28 - $37.35 per hour. The final salary will be set based on factors including internal equity, experience, education, and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a specific wage.
