General Summary
Orthopedic technicians collaborate closely with physicians to apply and remove plaster and synthetic casts, fabricate splints and semi-custom thermoplastic braces. They assist patients with mobility aids such as canes and crutches, ensuring proper fit and adjustment. Additionally, they educate patients on treatment risks following wound care, casting, splinting, or the use of durable medical equipment (DME).

Representative Duties
Performs splinting, casting, and application of simple traction, braces and other devices under direction of an orthopedic physician or physician assistant.
Performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an orthopedic technologist, assisting with dressing changes, suture and pin removal, incision and drainage, reducing fractures, etc.
Educates patients and staff regarding proper care and use of orthopedic appliances.
Documents the care administered.
Monitors and orders all casting, clinical, DME, and patient supplies including instruments.
Cleans, autoclaves and properly packages surgical instruments.
Orient and provides on-the-job training in casting and splinting to resident physicians and staff.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
Knowledge
Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures.
Knowledge of specific task assistance related to medical practice.
Knowledge of sterile technique and orthopedic supplies.

Proficiency in the application of casting, splinting, and orthopedic appliances.

Education
