
Ophthalmic Technician III /Medical Assistant

Job Summary
Test and measure eye function to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. Prepare and close exam rooms at start and end of day, perform drug and supply inventory and stocking; support multiple physicians across multiple offices, traveling as needed. Obtain consents, authorizations, and schedule follow‑up appointments. Perform scribing duties and assist with clinical trials as requested. Help with telephone appointments, check patients in/out, schedule follow‑ups. Conduct insurance verification, authorizations, eligibility, and co‑pay collection; handle cash and end‑of‑day reconciliation.
Essential Functions
Test patients’ visual acuity (far, near), peripheral vision, depth perception, visual field, and tonometry; enter results into EMR; dilate eyes.
Perform and record optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fluorescein angiography, fundus photography, and ICG angiography on various devices.
Maintain photography supplies, cameras, and imaging equipment.
Manage image database and storage: sort, label, archive, retrieve patient images; ensure proper documentation and compliance with privacy regulations.
Assist with drug inventory, ordering supplies, and equipment maintenance.
Scribe exam findings into EMR, update patient information in MDI and NextGen as appropriate.
Open and close exam rooms; sterilize equipment; restock rooms and perform inventory.
Provide patient positioning, obtain consents, identify retinal landmarks, determine right/left fundus; correct selection of fields, focus, adjust for media opacities.
Communicate with physicians and staff; update EMR/PM systems; ensure HIPAA and OSHA compliance.
Assist with rooming patients, numbing, rinsing, and procedure setup as needed.
Meet departmental and team performance targets; maintain high‑quality patient service.
Other Responsibilities
Perform any tasks assigned by supervisor, Director of Operations, or physician.
Accountabilities
Maintain patient satisfaction by providing professional, friendly service. Complete assigned competencies within 3 months of hire and annually thereafter.
Requirements
Excellent patient relations and communication skills.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
One to two years of past medical clinic experience required.
Education
Minimum: high school diploma. College degree or continuing education courses desirable.
Physical Standards
Remain stationary for at least 50% of shift; move throughout office; lift up to 50 lbs; communicate with patients and document accurately in EMR and PM system.
Travel Requirements
Travel between Pleasanton, Castro Valley, San Leandro offices required; periodic travel to other clinic locations as needed.
Equipment
Use telephone, computer, copier, fax, scanner, exam chairs, imaging equipment, pharmaceutical refrigerators, and diagnostic testing equipment.
Unique Conditions
OSHA Classification Category I; exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.
