Patient Care Coordinator/Treatment Care Coordinator
for our Loudoun office.
Scope
Under direct supervision, the Coordinator serves as the patient’s medical liaison among the practice, hospital, support services, and payors. The Coordinator relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job, learning how to appropriately apply department procedures and policies. They will safely and appropriately call for assistance from a supervisor for guidance, perform a wide variety of tasks, and provide a certain degree of creativity and latitude. The Coordinator supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
Responsibilities
Prior to a patient’s first appointment, contact or meet with the patient to obtain basic chart information (diagnosis, referring physician, personal data, insurance, etc.) and ask questions regarding medical style in order to match with the network physician style or bedside manner. Inquire about the patient’s family, medical, and social services needs.
On behalf of the patient, coordinate physician referrals, schedule oncology‑related medical appointments within and outside the practice, resolve insurance billing and coding issues, contact agencies, and ensure accurate documents are in the medical chart.
Responsible for insurance verification and eligibility, assessment of patient financial requirements, educating patients on insurance benefits and co‑payments, obtaining pre‑authorization of services, and maintaining up‑to‑date patient demographics. May assist patients with obtaining financial resources.
Provide educational materials to patient and family and update, order, and maintain patient education materials including brochures, videos, and teaching materials.
Refer patient or family members to agencies and services such as housing, transportation, pharmaceutical needs, beauty supplies (wigs), prosthesis, counseling, etc. Network within the community to learn about and maintain an agency and services resource list.
Research routine inquiries in a timely and professional manner, and request assistance from senior coworkers or a supervisor to resolve non‑routine issues.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: high school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred. At least two (2) years of directly related experience such as medical coding or billing, patient advocacy, or social services required. Must demonstrate the ability to verbally articulate information and questions with others in order to perform responsibilities effectively, must be personable, and must have computer proficiency with medical billing systems and Microsoft Office Outlook & Word.
Physical Demands
Employees are regularly required to sit or stand and talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and occasionally reach with hands and arms; lift or move up to 10 pounds frequently. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Work Environment
The work is performed in a clinical environment requiring frequent interaction with staff, patients, and the public. The employee may need to travel by automobile to other US Oncology buildings. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
