Eligibility and Employment

Citizenship Requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Clearance Requirements: National Background Check with Inquiries and Fingerprints (Tier 1).

Type of Employment: Full-Time, 40 hours per week.

Estimate Pay: $12.93 – 18.02 per hour.

Paid Time Off: Up to 120 hours per year, which starts accruing on the day of hire.

Sick Leave per Year: Up to 56 hours per year, which starts accruing on the day of hire.

Paid Federal Holidays: Twelve (12) Paid Federal Holidays.

Working Hours
Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a 30‑minute unpaid lunch break, except on Federal holidays.

Summary of Duties
The Phlebotomist performs routine and specialized specimen collection, processing, and documentation to support clinical services. Responsibilities include collecting blood, urine, and other laboratory specimens; preparing, labeling, packaging, transporting samples in accordance with regulatory and laboratory standards; and maintaining accurate logs, records, and documentation for all laboratory activities.

Qualifications

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).

Must have completed a Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistant, and/or Emergency Medical Technician course of study – completion diploma is required.

Applicants must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience with basic laboratory and phlebotomy skills.

Have experience with specimen collection, packaging, and shipment to referral laboratories with knowledge of maintaining appropriate records.

Must be Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC) or the American Heart Association (AHA).

Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable but not required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Organize, schedule, and perform laboratory studies, specimen collection, and specimen processing within the Health Service Unit, including A&O in‑processing, DNA collection per procedure, vaccine programs, and PPD updates.

Collect blood, urine, and other clinical specimens; ensure proper labeling, handling, and documentation.

Prepare, package, and transport specimens in accordance with laboratory and regulatory requirements.

Ensure all laboratory requests are completed accurately and submitted to the contract laboratory.

Track and verify receipt of laboratory reports; notify the ordering provider, update logs, and file or scan results into the medical record.

Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation for all laboratory activities.

Support laboratory workflow by maintaining supplies, equipment readiness, and adherence to safety protocols.

Perform duties in compliance with VA policies, CLIA standards, and applicable regulations.
