
Patient Support Rep

Overview
This job is responsible for performing a variety of general administrative support duties associated with the patient intake process for the assigned Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) facility in accordance with established internal guidelines and procedures. Incumbents typically interact with patients directly at the front desk and/or on the phone to perform follow-up activities.
Responsibilities
Ensure patient is checked in/out for care.
Collect and enter demographic and financial data in the patient’s medical record.
Gather/validate insurance information using routine methods; schedule patient appointments.
Collect co-pays, co-insurance and prior balances.
Obtain and process referrals, authorizations and pre-certifications for patients requiring ancillary testing and/or surgical procedures.
Work with patients to ensure the patient’s referral needs are fulfilled and determine insurance benefit coverage for hardware related items (such as retail contact lenses) by working directly with patients’ insurance carriers, as needed.
Work requires critical thinking, listening to the needs of the patient and offering multiple options and solutions, knowledge of insurance authorization/billing requirements and privacy/confidentiality practices, as well as knowledge of medical terminology and the patient intake process. An incumbent should follow proper channels of communication in handling daily and routine problems and recognize issues that need referral to management. Strong customer service skills are required, offering the highest level of service to every patient every time.
Qualifications
Ability to follow instructions, analyze data, coordinate tasks and manage workload appropriately to meet business goals.
Establish and maintain effective communication while adhering to expectations of professionalism and camaraderie with co-workers, peers, supervisors and all persons with whom this role must interact in furtherance of completing all job duties.
One year of customer service work experience required.
Two years of customer service work experience preferred.
Healthcare-related experience required.
