Summary
The Lab Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. Works with the RN and/or MD/DO to appropriately provide acceptable standards of practice in promoting optimal patient care delivery. Provides effective education to patients and family members in relation to venipuncture, common disease processes, medication, and prescribed treatment regimes.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or the NLNAC.
Licensure: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as an LPN in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. An LPN with any revoked, suspended, denied, restricted or probationary license may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in chapter 3 – section B – paragraph 16 of this part or if covered by the Grandfathering Provision.
Grade Determinations: GS‑3 through GS‑6 based on experience. • GS‑3: Eligibility for basic duties. • GS‑4: Requires at least six months of qualifying experience or one year of experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical setting. • GS‑5: Requires at least one year of GS‑4 level experience or equivalent. • GS‑6: Requires at least one year of GS‑5 level experience or equivalent.
Knowledge and skills: Ability to provide practical nursing care to patients with physical and/or behavioral problems, administer and document medications, observe and report patient condition changes, initiate emergency measures, recognize equipment or safety hazards, and serve as a responsible member of the nursing team.
Duties
Serve as a resource for complex and specialized procedures including suture removal, wound care, blood draws, and clinic‑specific procedures.
Perform venipuncture for blood draws, prepare specimens, transcribe orders, accession labels, and provide patient education about lab tests.
Access lab software, review lab orders, and ensure results are communicated within established guidelines.
Demonstrate knowledge of standard precautions, medical asepsis, and sterile technique, and assist others in implementation in the clinic setting.
Assist with diagnostic procedures, prepare the patient, set up a sterile field, and monitor patient condition.
Interpret common test results and other medical data, provide education to patients and families about procedure preparations and diagnostic tests.
Collaborate with the PACT team and other interdisciplinary services in developing, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
Follow up on abnormal results with the provider and educate patients and families on disease management and care plans.
Assess, record, and report vital signs, neurological signs, weight, and blood glucose levels.
Appropriately triage and prioritize patient needs as routine, urgent, or emergent, and modify patient care/treatment as needed.
Work schedule: Monday–Friday 7:30 am–4:00 pm; evening and/or weekend work may be required depending on service needs.
