Overview
We are seeking a strategic and collaborative
Transportation Practice Builder
to establish and grow a transportation practice within an
SBE and DBE‑certified firm . This role is critical to expanding technical transportation capabilities while
preserving and strengthening the firm's SBE/DBE positioning , compliance, and culture.
The ideal candidate is a transportation leader who understands how to build scalable practices within certified environments—leveraging teaming strategies, mentoring internal staff, and aligning growth with certification requirements and long‑term ownership goals.
Key Responsibilities
Practice Development & Strategic Growth
Build and lead a transportation practice that complements and enhances the firm's existing SBE/DBE offerings.
Develop a phased growth strategy that aligns with certification rules, ownership structure, and participation requirements.
Identify transportation services to expand or introduce, including:
Roadway design
Drainage and stormwater
Traffic and safety
Multimodal and complete streets
Establish systems and processes that support sustainable, compliant practice growth.
Client & Business Development
Identify, pursue, and secure transportation work with:
State DOTs
Counties and municipalities
Transportation authorities
Prime consultants seeking SBE/DBE partners
Strategically position the firm as:
A
prime consultant
where appropriate
A
key SBE/DBE subconsultant
on larger transportation programs
Lead proposal development, teaming strategies, and client interviews.
Strengthen long‑term client relationships that translate into repeat work.
SBE / DBE Integration & Compliance
Work closely with firm leadership to ensure transportation growth aligns with:
SBE/DBE certification requirements
Ownership, control, and management criteria
Support compliance documentation related to project roles, staffing plans, and participation commitments.
Structure project staffing and roles to reinforce meaningful participation and technical credibility.
Actively mentor and elevate internal SBE/DBE staff into transportation roles.
Technical & Project Leadership
Provide technical oversight and strategic guidance on transportation projects.
Ensure projects meet quality, schedule, and budget expectations.
Support alternative delivery methods (Design‑Build, CMAR) when applicable.
Establish QA/QC standards consistent with public‑sector expectations.
Team Development & Mentorship
Build, mentor, and retain a high‑performing transportation team.
Recruit in a way that supports internal growth, knowledge transfer, and succession planning.
Collaborate with existing discipline leads to integrate transportation services seamlessly.
Foster a culture of accountability, inclusion, and professional development.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
Florida Professional Engineer (PE)
license required.
12+
years of transportation engineering experience.
Demonstrated success building or expanding transportation services.
Experience working with public‑sector transportation clients.
Understanding of
SBE and/or DBE program requirements
and best practices.
Strong communication, leadership, and client‑facing skills.
Ability to operate as a
player‑coach
within a growing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working within or partnering with
SBE/DBE‑certified firms .
Established DOT, county, or municipal relationships.
Experience helping firms transition from subconsultant to prime roles.
Knowledge of certification renewals, audits, and compliance processes.
Active involvement in professional organizations or mentorship programs.
