The Role
We are seeking pipe welders with a minimum of 10 years of hands‑on pipe welding experience to join our team. Candidates must have previously worked for NNS for at least 1.5 years and will be qualified through the shipyard’s Welding School. After graduation, welders will perform a wide range of welding filler metals and processes (SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW) to produce structural and pipe welds for aircraft carriers and submarines. Required physical and safety qualifications are listed below.
Responsibilities
Perform tack, fillet, and full‑penetration welding on steel foundations and pipe joints.
Use manual and mechanized welding processes in all positions.
Meet nondestructive test requirements (visual, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, radiographic).
Receive training in visual inspection, fire watch, carbon arcing, and equipment troubleshooting.
Work flexible shifts as production needs dictate.
Work in extreme heights, confined spaces, and variable weather conditions.
Perform physical tasks such as kneeling, squatting, crawling, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting 40 lbs, and passing a respirator fit test.
Pass a physical agility test and perform overhead work.
Work overtime when required.
Undergo background investigation and drug screen.
Qualifications
Minimum 10 years of pipe welding experience.
Minimum 1.5 years of prior employment with NNS.
Ability to work assigned shifts and overtime.
Strong physical capability (60 lbs lift, 40 lbs lift, etc.).
Valid respiratory fit test, physical agility test, and other safety screenings.
