Clinical Lab Assistant - Phlebotomist/ Rust, (1372)
Schedule:
Monday-Friday 1330-1730 with other shifts as needed.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Clinical Lab Assistant Phlebotomist works independently with minimal supervision. Successful candidates perform one or more identified modalities, with compensation dependent on the number performed. Apprenticeship level may be considered for candidates without experience. Regular in‑person attendance during scheduled hours is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs duties in a professional and courteous manner.
Maintains supplies and inventory necessary to perform departmental functions.
Observes students and/or new staff as needed.
Exhibits basic problem‑solving skills to ensure exceptional customer and patient care service levels.
Responsible for hospital communication responsibilities, including on‑call duties during scheduled hours (cell phone) as assigned.
Demonstrates effective telephone and verbal communication skills.
Actively demonstrates professional judgment when dealing with clients, patients, and co‑workers.
Performs clerical functions as needed, including documentation of critical communications such as call‑ins in the absence of a supervisor.
Maintains confidentiality of personal and confidential information.
Participates in coverage for on‑call, holidays, evenings, and weekends as needed.
Demonstrates basic PC skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred: PBT (ASCP) or equivalent certification; completion of a relevant Clinical Lab Assistant or comparable program.
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS: Prove immunity to Hepatitis B or be immunized, or sign a waiver. Provide documentation of a PPD test conducted within 90 days prior to hire.
For departments with direct patient contact: Prove immunity or be eligible for rubella, measles, and varicella immunizations.
General: Valid driver’s license with good driving record; insurable by lab insurance carrier. Eligible to work in a health care facility under New Mexico law.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
Candidates with no training or experience may be considered for an apprenticeship.
Selected candidates will be placed into CLA Level 1‑4 based on the number of modalities performed.
MULTIPLE MODALITIES
Check‑in and Order Entry/Reconciliation (clinical, anatomic, research, referral testing)
General Phlebotomy (ages 10+) – vacutainer, butterfly, and syringe collections.
Special Collections and/or external shipping certification (arterial blood gas, pediatric/infant draws, sweat, breath, health/drug screens, MRSA, Covid, therapeutic phlebotomies).
Assisting provider‑performed procedures (FNA, bone marrow, EBUS, bronchial lavage).
Specimen Processing (receipt, sorting, delivery/loading, decanting, retrieval, triage, storage, disposal).
Non‑conformity investigation/Problem Resolution (Problem Desk, Portal, TLC, NCE).
Lab Equipment Maintenance and/or support (superuser), including chemical/biohazard waste management for non‑testing instrumentation.
Sample Testing (waived to moderate), including instrument maintenance, biohazard disposal, QC.
Training and competency assessment of modalities (e.g., N95 FIT testing).
Department‑specific skilled assistance (BB‑Product prep, infectious disease, genetics & cytometry, histology & cytology, TRI Honest Broker).
Department‑specific clerical or support functions (AP/HP case organization, FFPE block filing, consult case management).
Skilled Inventory Management (ordering, receiving, monitoring par levels, end‑of‑month reconciliations).
