Telecommunications Mechanic (PSTS-2026-25069)
Bowhead seeks a Telecommunications Mechanic for a newly awarded contract effort to provide Base Telecom Support at the Puget Sound, WA Shipyard and satellite locations. The effort will provide telecommunications operations and maintenance (O&M). This includes secure and reliable, classified and unclassified, voice and data services in support of Command, Control, Computer, Communications and Information (C4I) operations and exercises.
Essential Functions
Install, maintain, and repair outside telecommunications infrastructure, including:
Underground and aerial copper/fiber cabling
Backbone and distribution systems
Conduits, vaults, ducts, and pedestals
Perform:
Fiber and copper splicing (fusion and mechanical)
OTDR and power meter testing
Fault isolation and emergency restoration
Termination of cables in manholes, handholes, and wiring closets
Conduct:
Routine inspections and preventive maintenance
Documentation of cabling routes, splicing records, and test results
Safety hazard assessments for all work zones
Collaborate with engineers, ISP technicians, and site leadership for infrastructure upgrades and repairs.
Other duties as assigned.
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Technical trade certification (telecom, electronics, or fiber optics) is highly desirable.
Years of Experience
3-5 years hands‑on experience in OSP cabling, preferably on government or large enterprise networks.
Prior experience working in base or campus‑style environments (e.g., DoD, universities, utilities) is ideal.
Required Skills or Certifications
Fiber Optic Installer or Technician Certification (e.g., ETA or FOA).
Confined Space Entry and Fall Protection training (required for manhole and aerial work).
Proficiency with:
OTDR, fusion splicer, power meters
Cable locating equipment and tone generators
Familiarity with:
Industry standards (BICSI, TIA/EIA)
Military base safety and security protocols
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and route maps.
Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Physical Demands
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time.
Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.
Security Clearance Requirements
Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
