Kansas City, MO. Rose Brooks Center, a nonprofit domestic violence agency, is currently seeking a full-time Shelter Advocate (Wed-Sat 7am-5pm).

The Shelter Advocate provides survivor‑centered, accessible, and trauma‑informed advocacy to residents of Rose Brooks Center. The shelter is a low‑barrier, voluntary participation program serving adult and child survivors of domestic violence. Primary responsibilities include crisis intervention, safety planning, and advocacy for callers on the hotline and within the shelter, and shaping services and activities that promote a healthy, safe, and positive living environment. This position supports the agency’s mission and values, collaborates within a multidisciplinary team and external systems, and reports to the Shelter Manager.

Qualifications

Experience providing excellent customer service and inclusive services to a diverse client group.

Strong computer skills (MS Office, database systems, and other software).

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Time‑management skills and the flexibility and ability to prioritize job tasks.

Ability to provide services in line with Rose Brooks Center’s values, beliefs, and philosophies centered on trauma‑informed care and accessibility.

Proven ability to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team.

Valid driver’s license and ability to provide proof of automobile insurance.

Preferred Skills/Experience

1 year or more experience working in a residential setting or crisis intervention role.

Experience in providing domestic violence advocacy.

Knowledge of relevant community resources.

Knowledge of trauma‑informed care and dynamics of domestic violence.

Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

Physical And Mental Demands/Working Conditions
Ability to perform the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

See computer screen, read, and complete forms.

Lift up to 25 pounds to the waist, push, pull, lift, bend, climb, reach, sit, walk and stand.

Transport (drive) residents on occasion.

Answer phone calls in a busy environment (hear callers and be responsive).

Use standard cleaning supplies.

Exposure to animals (primarily dogs and cats).

Exposure to viruses and other contagious diseases within the shelter.

Exposure to others’ trauma.

Take personal responsibility for the effects of trauma exposure to reduce negative impact on self and others.

Work in a high‑intensity, fast‑paced work environment, multitask, and prioritize.

Hours
Full Time Wednesday through Saturday 7am to 5pm. Some holidays are required.

Compensation
This position falls into a non‑exempt range starting at an hourly rate of $20, with an additional shift differential of 5% for hours from 7p to 7a and all‑day Saturday/Sunday.
