Emergency Department Technician I (ED Tech I) – Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC
Location: Durham, NC 27710
Start Date: January 12, 2026
Work Schedule: Full Time, 3 12‑hour nights (7 pm–7 am) per week
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Nurse, the ED Tech I performs initial basic life support interventions and provides patient‑care support in the Emergency Department.
Responsibilities
Perform initial basic life support interventions (airway, breathing, and circulation) on emergency‑department patients.
Initiate life‑saving measures such as opening an airway, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, stabilization of fractures, and cervical spine protection.
Stabilize and extricate injured patients from vehicles at the department entrance.
Assist patients to and from vehicles and the emergency department.
Serve as a liaison between patient families and the emergency staff, maintaining open communication regarding patient condition and status.
Transport patients from triage/waiting areas to treatment areas upon the Nurse’s request.
Perform related duties as required.
Assist with EKGs, vital sign measurement, specimen labeling, and hour‑by‑hour patient rounding for comfort and pain assessment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must be able to perform all Nurse Aide I tasks defined by the North Carolina Division of Facility Services Nurse Aide Registry; heavy lifting and transporting patients are required.
Provide care to patients of all ages.
Exhibit excellent prioritization, self‑motivation, and the ability to work in a fast‑paced, unpredictable, and stressful environment.
Receive training in hazmat decontamination procedures.
Demonstrate competency validation in skills and knowledge for performance of duties.

Education
High‑school graduation or GED. Successful completion of NCA I training or North Carolina EMT training is required.
Experience
Related experience preferred but not required.
Certifications
Current minimum listing as an NCA I with the Division of Facility Services or minimum credential as EMT. BLS certification required.
