Purpose of Position
The Police Officer, with moderate supervision, is responsible for the protection of life, property, and facilities of the University community through the proper administration and enforcement of regulations and laws in conformance with standard law enforcement practices in an institution of higher learning. These duties may involve an element of personal danger. Police Officers regularly conduct criminal investigations, perform searches and seizures, arrest offenders, present criminal cases to prosecutors for prosecution in district and municipal courts, respond to medical and other emergencies, write moving traffic violations, and assist other local law enforcement agencies.

Responsibilities

Patrol on foot or by vehicle of assigned areas, responding to signs of trouble and determining appropriate action, including investigation, search, arrest, or other applicable action. Become involved in investigations, testify in court, and confer with other law enforcement agencies.

Collect, analyze, and verify information from interviews, assess consistency and value of information, notify as needed, locate, collect, handle, and preserve physical evidence, interview complainants, witnesses, and suspects. Direct and control traffic flow and pedestrian movement on campus, patrol streets, enforce traffic ordinances and laws, and issue traffic citations for moving violations to municipal and district courts as appropriate.

Enforce traffic laws while multi‑tasking: drive at higher speeds while reading registration plates, relay information on the radio, receive and monitor radio traffic, and position vehicles to ensure officer, violator, and public safety.

Manage accident scenes by controlling traffic flow, directing traffic in extreme weather, maintaining safety equipment, investigating causes (including photographing or sketching scenes), and taking appropriate enforcement action; report hazardous conditions.

Complete written reports in compliance with department procedures, determine necessity of reports, and complete them promptly using appropriate forms. Initiate follow‑up reports for further investigation when needed.

When applicable, mark and package evidence and ensure it is properly documented and stored for later examination or court presentation.

Prepare reports that are well organized, narratively chronological, concise, free of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and word use errors, and written with legible handwriting.

Apprehend and/or arrest violators of the law, exercising care to ensure legal and constitutional soundness; pursue suspects on foot in extreme climates or rough terrain, restrain combative individuals, and complete the booking process. Adhere to the Constitution, state laws, city ordinances, departmental rules, law enforcement code of ethics, and general principles of police work when making arrests. Appear and testify as a professional witness when summoned.

Respond to emergency situations that may require extreme physical exertion, making immediate decisions and gaining control of the situation, rendering necessary aid, and interviewing all parties involved.

Operate emergency vehicles safely within departmental guidelines, driving at high speeds while relaying information in noisy environments, exercising caution to ensure safety and minimize property damage, and rendering aid and assistance to citizens and motorists when appropriate.

Establish and maintain professional contact with University employees, residents, and others in the patrol district to foster cooperation and a favorable attitude toward order and effective police protection.

Use communication skills and special techniques when contacting community members from varied cultural and educational backgrounds, avoiding escalation and negative consequences.

Provide information about police policies, procedures, and techniques as they affect the public, present a professional demeanor, appearance, and maintain good relations with other law enforcement agencies.

Develop skills and proficiency with all equipment, including firearms, batons, handcuffs, and vehicles; maintain safe care and control, keep equipment in good repair, and report needs to the supervisor promptly.

Maintain annual law enforcement officer certification as required by state statute; qualify with duty weapons per department policy; attend required departmental training, keeping current on legal changes and departmental activities that affect duties.

Attend in‑service training to meet state requirements, hone skills, and enhance services.

Conduct security checks of facilities and grounds to ensure safety and security of University property.

Comply with all laws, rules, regulations, code of ethics, and procedures applying to the law enforcement profession; maintain certification in first‑aid principles and apply them.

Enforce University rules and regulations regarding parking, traffic, safety, etc.; direct safety measures for safe transit for motorists, perform preventative patrol by vehicle or foot, and issue citations.

Carry out required duties when assigned, often with short notice and adverse weather, possibly mentoring others as needed.

May be assigned to special investigations temporarily as deemed necessary; perform surveillance operations in extreme weather or extended periods.

Perform any other tasks necessary for the University to accomplish its mission.

Minimum Requirements

High school education or equivalent (college preferred); at least 19 years old; valid driver's license; ability to work any shift; military service members must have an honorable discharge; U.S. citizenship is required.

Must obtain an Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission Certification (APOSTC) within 6 months of employment. Successful applicants must pass extensive background check, medical, drug, psychological, and physical ability tests prior to attending an Alabama Police Academy.

Basic Ability Test (BAT) required for all Police Officer Recruit applicants, except those already APOSTC certified or with an associate's degree or higher from a SACS‑accredited institution.

Applicants without a valid ACT WorkKeys Assessment BAT may test at any Alabama Community College; a $45 fee is payable to the college. If an applicant fails any segment of the three‑segment test, they may retake that segment for an additional $15 per segment. The ACT WorkKeys Assessment is available nationwide. Subject to the employing agency’s approval, out‑of‑state applicants may take the ACT WorkKeys Assessment BAT in their home state, provided proper documentation of a valid test result is submitted to both the employing agency and APOSTC.
