$23.17 per hour

After Passing State Exam:

$26.28 per hour

General Description Of Duties
Under direct supervision of Certified Correctional Staff, the Corrections Officer Cadet will direct, supervise, and monitor inmates housed in the Osceola Correctional Facility. Responsibilities include custody, control, and care of inmates, supporting safe and efficient facility operations, and transporting inmates to and from various locations.

Mandatory Requirements for Acceptance into the Correctional Academy

Pass the Correctional Criminal Justice Basic Ability Test (CJBAT). The County will cover the $39 exam fee upon successful completion of the interview process.

Pass the Correctional Academy Physical Assessment Test (PAT). Minimum requirements: a 1.5‑mile run in under 18 minutes, at least 25 sit‑ups in 1 minute, and at least 15 standard push‑ups in 1 minute.

Attend a Valencia College Criminal Justice Institute informational session.

INTERNAL CANDIDATES IN THE SAME CLASSIFICATION AND/OR PAYGRADE WILL NOT RECEIVE A PAY ADJUSTMENT IF SELECTED.

Minimum Qualifications For Corrections Officer Cadet Academy

At least 18 years old and a United States Citizen.

High School Diploma or GED.

Valid Florida driver’s license; CDL with passenger endorsement required before transporting inmates.

Completion and passing of CPR and First Aid certifications.

No felony or misdemeanor convictions involving perjury or false statements.

Pass CJBAT, PAT, extensive background check, polygraph, psychological exam, and comprehensive physical exam.

Attend and complete the Corrections Officer Academy.

Work all shifts and overtime as a Certified Corrections Officer.

Essential Job Functions

Provide care, custody, and control of inmates; enforce order and discipline; monitor inmate housing, job, and program assignments.

Comply with all laws, rules, and regulatory standards governing detention facilities.

Conduct scheduled and unscheduled rounds and inspections; search inmates and cells for contraband.

Perform inmate classification, count, and control; maintain fire safety and perimeter security.

Bear assigned firearm and hand weapons; screen inmate visitors.

Supervise, communicate, and promote positive inmate behavior; resolve behavioral problems through counseling.

Employ force as prescribed to maintain order; escort and secure inmates within the facility.

Transport inmates to and from locations such as courts and medical facilities.

Attend defensive tactics, firearm qualifications, and First Aid/CPR training.

Maintain detailed logs, incident reports, and other legal documentation.

Perform other duties as assigned that relate to the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Understand and follow written and oral instructions; communicate clearly in writing and orally.

Knowledge of correctional facility operations, handgun use, and weapon handling.

Familiarity with inmate care, custody, and control principles; law enforcement procedures and equipment.

Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations applicable to the work.

Read, analyze, and interpret professional periodicals, technical procedures, and legal documentation.

Recognize signs and symptoms of substance abuse.

Work under stressful conditions; observe, report, and handle emergency situations.

Manage customer relations and handle irate, violent, or frantic individuals.

Work independently; prioritize tasks; analyze problems and develop solutions.

Perform intermittent physically demanding work; stand, walk, climb stairs for extended periods.

Establish and maintain communication with inmates, agencies, co‑workers, and the public.

Operate basic office equipment, including radio, computer terminals, printers, and telephone systems.

Physical Demand Requirements

Very heavy physical demand; lift up to 100 pounds.

Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Perform push/pull movements on arms and legs when primarily sitting.

Use spoken communication; perceive sound by ear.

Good vision for safety.

Walk, run, stoop, bend, and climb stairs.

Walk, sit, stand, or climb stairs for extended periods.

Work under stressful conditions.
