Bus Driver in Training, 2025 - 2026 School Year
Position for the Route Drivers Substitute Pool, Bus Drivers in Training, and Trip Drivers with varying shifts during the 2025-2026 school year. Applications will be screened, and selected applicants will be notified by the District Recruiter. A Department of Transportation pre-placement DOT physical and drug screen test is required.

Position Summary
Temporary placement for new route drivers in training. Trainees will learn to safely operate school buses under all weather conditions such as fog, rain, sleet, snow, and ice. Responsibilities include transporting students and authorized persons along regular "to and from school" routes and on field, co-curricular, and special activity trips as authorized by school district officials. Trainees are expected to interact positively and professionally with students, parents, the public, and school authorities, prepare reports, and observe all rules and regulations governing their duties.

Hourly Rates
Substitutes for Route Driver in Training: 25-26 school year, C2 – $19.55 per hour. Non-experienced applicants begin at $19.55 and may advance to E2 $24.13 after training. Experienced drivers with eligible credentials may begin at E2.

Retirement Plan Contributions
The district participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System. The employer contributes the mandatory portion; employees contribute 6% of their salary after completing at least six full calendar months or 600 hours in a year.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Strong customer-service experience and ability to establish and maintain effective relations with patrons and staff.

Effective oral and written communication; analytical ability; and knowledge and skill in using office technology and software.

Ability to work independently and cooperatively.

Ability to organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Ability to follow a map and/or directions.

Eligibility to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License and possession of a safe driving record.

Subject to random drug testing under Department of Transportation guidelines as part of the district’s anti-drug and alcohol prevention programs.

Eligibility to obtain a school bus driver’s certification and any necessary licensing endorsement.

Ability to complete first-aid certification and willingness and ability to provide emergency first aid.

Desired Qualifications

Bilingual and bicultural skills.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Drive school bus on scheduled routes and trips for approved activities inside and outside district boundaries.

Communicate with parents to provide or exchange information on students in accordance with district policies and maintain confidentiality as required by FERPA.

Operate all school bus equipment, including adaptive equipment for special needs (e.g., wheel-chair lifts).

Apply Oregon Department of Education requirements for transporting students with special needs.

Demonstrate pupil-management skills and attend required special-needs training.

Ensure safety equipment such as lifts, seat belts, and securement straps are in working order and used per manufacturer and district standards.

Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including cleaning bus interiors and exteriors as required.

Maintain control of students, manage safety and behavior per district policy, and report unsafe actions or conditions.

Complete state and district training programs in school-bus operation.

Accurately complete forms, record timesheets, and other documentation required by state or district policies.

Operate all hand and foot controls on the school bus as specified by state and vehicle requirements.

Provide first aid, record accident reports, and safeguard other vehicles during emergencies.

Operate the school bus in accordance with state laws and district policies.

Perform required operational and safety inspections of the bus and related equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Requirements
Applicants must assume the cost and arrange for a fingerprint-based criminal records check upon offer of employment.
