Purpose Statement
The job of Head Coach is done for the purpose/s of designing and implementing the athletic program for assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; providing supervision of other coaching personnel; providing supervision of students during all aspects of the program; using sound instructional techniques in overseeing program activities; serving as a positive role model to student athletes; and serving in a liaison capacity for the school and program with other schools both within and/or outside the district, to the community, and to various organizations. Individuals in this job classification are assigned to a position for assigned sport(s) and oversees all aspects of the respective athletic program(s). This job reports to Athletic Director.

Essential Functions

Assesses student athletes for the purpose of providing feedback on performance and/or determining team placement.

Attends a variety of meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. to receive and convey information related to the role.

Conducts supporting activities (e.g., parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to provide information regarding the program and/or recognize participants’ accomplishments.

Develops team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance performance.

Develops game strategies and plans by analyzing opponent strengths, athlete abilities, and creating plays.

Guides other coaching personnel in instructional techniques, organization of practices, and supervision guidelines.

Identifies program needs and recommends expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies that enhance the athletic program.

Implements practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient program operation.

Instructs students to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Maintains records (statistics, insurance, permission forms, schedules, inventories) to comply with district, conference, state, and reporting requirements.

Monitors academic eligibility to comply with AIA requirements and provide intervention to maintain eligibility.

Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, etc. to provide direction and monitor activities.

Promotes the athletic program through clinics, skill‑camp information, and community meetings to increase participation.

Responds to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, and college representatives.

Keeps the school athletic director informed of issues that impact the program.

Provides appropriate supervision for all athletes and participants.

Explains the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct to all athletes.

Maintains high standards of personal conduct and serves as a role model.

Ensures all coaches in the program are cleared through the PVUSD Human Resources Department.

Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Abilities – Communicate with diverse backgrounds; handle interruptions; exhibit strong leadership; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; model sportsmanship; motivate athletes; enforce fair discipline; provide leadership, direction, and team building; travel to off‑campus events; work extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities
Work under limited supervision, follow standardized practices; direct others within a small unit; utilize resources from other units; continually impact services.

Work Environment
Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; fine finger dexterity. The job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. Conditions may involve temperature extremes and exposure to injury or illness risks.

Experience
Job‑related experience is required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
