Position
Laboratory Analyst – Solid Materials Mass Spectrometry (GDMS) – Syracuse, NY

GDMS experience is not required; the role is ideal for candidates with strong hands‑on analytical laboratory experience who are interested in developing deep expertise in a high‑resolution solid‑state mass spectrometry technique widely used in industrial quality control, semiconductor manufacturing, and advanced materials research.

Note: Relocation assistance is not provided for this role. Candidates are prioritized if local or within reasonable commuting distance to the work location.

Work Schedule

Primary schedule: 3:30 PM – 2:00 AM, Monday–Thursday

Alternate schedule: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday–Friday

Candidates must be comfortable working the evening shift based on business needs.

Key Responsibilities
Analytical Testing & Reporting

Perform bulk compositional analysis and depth profiling of solid materials.

Analyze metals, alloys, powders, ceramics, coatings, and semiconductor‑related materials.

Generate accurate, customer‑ready analytical reports.

Detect trace and ultra‑trace elements, including carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, at very low concentration levels.

Interpret data and identify potential interferences or anomalies.

Sample Preparation

Prepare solid samples using:

Bench‑top shears and hand‑held metal snips

Precision saws

Grinding and polishing equipment

Acid‑based chemical preparation

Maintain high standards of cleanliness, contamination control, and documentation.

Instrumentation & Troubleshooting

Operate advanced analytical instrumentation, including mass spectrometry systems.

Perform routine instrument checks, performance verification, and troubleshooting.

Escalate or independently resolve complex technical issues based on experience level.

Participate in continuous improvement of analytical methods and laboratory workflows.

Collaboration & Quality

Work closely with scientists, analysts, and operations teams to meet customer timelines.

Prioritize work effectively in a high‑throughput industrial laboratory.

Comply with internal quality systems, safety requirements, and ISO 27001 information security standards.

Qualifications
Regulatory & Work Authorization Requirements

This position is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or an associated field and 2+ years of relevant analytical experience.

Strong experience working with analytical instrumentation; prior GDMS experience is not required.

Background with techniques such as:
ICP‑OES or ICP‑MS

Gas analysis

Solid materials characterization

Optical or electron microscopy (experience with solid samples is highly valued)

Skills & Attributes

Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working hands‑on with instruments and samples.

Ability to learn and master new analytical techniques.

Strong attention to detail and data quality.

Ability to work independently with increasing technical ownership.

Effective communication and technical writing skills.

Customer‑focused mindset and collaborative approach.

Willingness to work evening shift as required.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 80% of the time.

Ability to continuously operate a personal computer or lab equipment for extended periods of time (4 or more hours).

Ability to operate a keyboard and other lab equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead.

Ability to communicate clearly and understandably; ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting.

Ability to handle small and fragile devices with tweezers and/or fingers.

Requires close‑distance visual acuity with or without correction (glasses, contacts, etc.).

Must be willing and able to wear PPE such as hard‑hat, steel‑toed shoes, safety glasses, laboratory coat and/or any other devices or equipment that are required.

Learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, make timely decisions in the context of a workflow, ability to communicate with visitors, ability to complete tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity quota.

Ability to move equipment or items up to 50 lbs.
