Job Title
Nurse Surveyor / Nursing Evaluator, Minnesota Department of Health
Location and Work Schedule
St. Paul, MN – Full‑time, Day Shift 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Up to 75% travel required. Eligible for up to 50% telework depending on proximity to the work location.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct scheduled onsite surveys of state‑licensed assisted living facilities and home‑care providers.
Make onsite observations, conduct interviews, and write licensing correction orders based on survey findings.
Participate in administrative hearings and conduct follow‑up visits to ensure correction of licensing violations.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently licensed in Minnesota as a Registered Nurse without restriction.
Two (2) years of experience in a health care setting, including but not limited to:
Registered Nurse (RN)
Charge Nurse (at least two years as an RN charge nurse)
RN Supervisor
Director of Nursing
Health Care Administrator
Alternative qualifications:
Master’s degree in Nursing, Public Health, Health Care Administration, Psychology, or a closely related medical field – substitute for eighteen (18) months of experience.
Bachelor’s degree in one of the above areas – substitute for twelve (12) months of experience.
Associate’s degree in one of the above areas – substitute for six (6) months of experience.
Additional Qualifications (Assessed During Interview)
Strong oral communication skills sufficient to interview staff, residents, clients, and patients.
Critical thinking skills to collect and analyze information, identify focus areas, and make evidence‑based decisions.
Listening skills sufficient to ascertain compliance with resident/client needs.
Interpersonal skills for developing and maintaining effective working relationships and informing providers of deficiencies.
Written communication skills sufficient to document concise, accurate, and complete information and conclusions.
Computer skills sufficient to document findings and conclusions.
Preferred Qualifications
Clinical and/or management experience in assisted living and/or home care settings.
Experience conducting regulatory, licensing, or healthcare‑related investigations.
Experience working with diverse populations, including different religions or gender identities.
Ability to speak multiple languages; bilingual preferred.
Ability to apply nursing and health knowledge to the review of providers.
Additional Requirements
Successful completion of a background check and employment reference check.
No valid driver’s license required, but travel must be personally available.
