Job Responsibilities
This role assists patients with all billing inquiries across the organization in a face‑to‑face environment. Key duties include reviewing patient bills, collecting liability for upcoming procedures, collecting residual and past‑due balances, reviewing alternative benefit coverage options for medical and pharmaceutical services, securing authorizations, setting up fee arrangements, and backfilling for coverage at other locations. The role ensures the best patient experience by providing timely and accurate assistance.
Education
High School diploma or equivalent (required)
Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
Work Experience
1 year of customer service, healthcare or office experience (required)
Previous healthcare billing/collections/customer service experience (preferred)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information
Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process
Proficiency with Windows applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related software packages
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to multi‑task
Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, ever‑changing environment
Ability to remain calm and professional in high‑pressure or stressful situations regarding patient financial and medical conversations
Ability to work with minimal supervision and make independent decisions
Reliable transportation as may be required to travel to other facilities for coverage
Job Duties
Promptly and courteously assist and provide accurate information to patients regarding their accounts or services face to face, via e‑mail, fax, regular mail, or phone call
Act as a liaison between patient, providers, external departments or other responsible persons to ensure that charges are applied appropriately, transactions are recorded and maintained, and account balances and discrepancies are resolved within the prescribed period
Ensure appropriate authorizations are obtained in a timely manner and provide accurate estimates for upcoming procedures
Plan, organize, and prioritize work to discuss with patients the importance of financial responsibility
Educate patients on various available assistance options and explain the financial impact of alternatives
Provide best‑in‑class service to every patient inquiry to maintain high levels of satisfaction
Represent the organization by providing appropriate competency and professionalism to ensure all patient issues are resolved timely, accurately, and efficiently
Other related duties as required
Physical and Environmental Demands
Sedentary work requiring occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds and regular standing or walking for brief periods of time. Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue, communicable diseases and hazardous medications or waste may occur in a healthcare setting.
The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms. The incumbent has an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases. Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be an occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste. The risk level may increase depending on duties.
