FLSA Status: Part-Time Seasonal Non-Exempt

Position Summary
Supports the stormwater department staff in the administration and management of the City’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit and stormwater operations within the city.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assists with inspections and tracking of pre, ongoing, and post construction stormwater infrastructure, both public and private, to ensure compliance with program requirements and that systems are operating as designed. Documents findings and consults on preparing reports and recommendations.

Supports stormwater staff in collection of design data, field surveys, and other information-gathering to support stormwater operations and capital program management.

Supports the design, bidding, construction and closeout for any stormwater capital projects.

Participates in public education and outreach in support of compliance with the MS4 permit requirements.

Assists the stormwater operations crew and Contractors to provide maintenance to various public infrastructure elements.

Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to write and submit reports, proposals, and to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and consultants.

Familiarity with engineering standards, material specifications, and the ability to apply engineering judgement appropriately to resolve discrepancies/disputes.

Familiarity with stormwater and MS4 permit requirements.

Ability to read and understand construction plans.

Working knowledge of CAD, GIS, and asset management software.

Knowledge of municipal procurement systems and contracting processes.

Ability to apply acute attention to detail while performing all tasks.

Physical Activities

Work time will be split between indoor and outdoor work. Portions of the job will be conducted in an indoor office environment and portions will be conducted in an outdoor setting, including construction sites.

Occasionally required to work with and around loud noises, fumes, airborne particles, toxic and caustic chemicals, electricity, vibration, and other hazards typical of a construction site.

Physical demands of job require some lifting; pulling; carrying and pushing of objects – approximately 50 pounds.

Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing.

Climbing on stairs and traversing uneven terrain.

Occasionally required to work in adverse weather conditions.

Communicates verbally and electronically with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.

Requirements
Minimum Qualification(s):

Experience: None Required

Education: High School Diploma (or equivalent) and enrollment in a post-secondary engineering, construction management, water resources, ecology, or similarly related field.

Licenses/Certifications: Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty days of hire, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Cañon City.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as an intern with similar job duties.

Completion of at least one academic period of post‑secondary coursework towards an engineering, construction management, water resources, ecology, or similarly related degree.

Additional Information

This internship will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.

This internship may be required to occasionally attend meetings or other events both during and after normal business hours.

Travel within the City of Cañon City and Fremont County may be required.

Occasional extension of business hours may be required to meet deadlines.
