What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Neutron Generator Electromechanical Trades
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Manufacture high consequence and high rigor products
Ensure that production processes, related equipment, and materials are ready for use in fabricating qualified and development hardware
Follow detailed written work instructions, operating procedures, and specifications in the manufacture of high consequence products using manually-operated and computer-controlled equipment such as vacuum systems, target loaders, evaporators, and exhausters in a contamination-controlled (e.g., clean room) limited access facility
Use documented processes, perform experiments to characterize new or improved processes, fixtures, and equipment as well as fabricate development products
Participate on, or lead, Continuous Process Improvement Teams
Verify the readiness of operators, work instructions, equipment, tooling, fixtures, and gages to perform work
Perform chemical cleaning, thin film evaporation, laser, resistance, and electron beam welding, machining, OGP operations, epoxy joining and encapsulation, subassembly, final assembly, Neutron Tube exhaust processing, high voltage product testing, and other fabrication processes
Identify deficiencies in the production line, coordinate the work of others to ensure the attainment of development and production schedules, utilize a computerized database to maintain required records and perform in-process inspection operations to ensure product meets customer design, development, and manufacturing
Work on assignments that require RAD-worker training and certification
Act as lead person which includes, but is not limited to, responsibilities for making schedule commitments, assignment of work to coworkers, and instructing and training others
Plan and perform work using industry-standard safety practices. Requirements include completion of the Sandia Production Trades Training Program or successful completion of Sandia National Laboratories Neutron Generator Apprentice Training Program certified by the NM State Apprenticeship Council
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite full time
As a condition of employment, Metals Trades positions are represented by the Metal Trades Council (MTC) and represented employees must pay the monthly membership dues or agency fee.
Qualifications We Require
Prerequisites for entry into an Apprenticeship Program
Eighteen (18) years of age or older
Eligible to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
Associates of Applied Science (AAS) Degree Program as provided by Central New Mexico community College or equivalent with an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. Degrees could be in the following concentration: Metals Technology with a concentration in Machine Tool Technology, Electronics Technology or Electronic Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Technology with any concentration or relevant degree and/or equivalent work experience (minimum 4 years) at hiring manager discretion.
Qualifications We Desire
Minimum of 5-8 years as a fully qualified Materials Processing Specialty Tradesperson
Completion of a State approved Materials Specialty apprenticeship program
Attainment of an associates degree with an emphasis in a relevant area
Possess the equivalent on-the-job work experience
Demonstrated ability to conduct work in a safe manner
Proven ability to adhere to written work instructions
Committed to conducting work safely
Skilled in collaborating within a team environment
Proficient in computer usage
Background in high-consequence component production
Knowledgeable in handling radioactive materials
Experienced in process improvement initiatives
Familiarity with Oracle software
Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills

About Our Team
The Neutron Tube Manufacturing Team (7562-2) is responsible for transforming Neutron Tube subassemblies into completed Neutron Tubes to meet the Neutron Generator Master Production Schedule. Our processes include target hydriding, metal evaporation, chemical cleaning, welding, tube exhaust, encapsulation, testing, and inspection.
Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements to access classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
