The Medical Support Specialist (MSS) is responsible for performing routine medical and testing procedures under direct supervision of the treating clinician as well as supporting other areas of the facility as needed, including registration and referral management. This role requires efficient and accurate delivery of one‑on‑one patient care while thriving in a fast‑paced environment.
Responsibilities
Perform Department of Transportation (DOT) and Non‑DOT drug and alcohol testing
Prepare patients for physical examinations, taking vital signs and any required or requested ancillary testing (vaccines, injections, phlebotomy, PFTs, audiogram testing, respirator fit testing)
Perform rapid screening tests (influenza, strep, mono, glucose, etc.)
Assist providers during examination and treatment
Perform routine medical procedures as ordered by the treating clinician and triage emergent patients as needed
Assist clinicians with procedure set‑up and injury care
Apply bandages, dressings and splints as ordered
Dispense medications and DME as ordered in accordance with state regulations
Complete quality assurance activities on equipment and medical devices, and testing processes used in the center
Maintain supplies, clean rooms and equipment, and stock exam rooms
Operate all medical devices and equipment, including calibration and record keeping per current policy and procedures
Notify supervisor immediately if equipment is malfunctioning, supplies are needed, or facility is not operating as expected
Assist with patient flow and volume in partnership with center leadership
Keep patients informed of expected wait times during all aspects of the center visit
Perform clerical tasks in both the front and back office associated with patient care and proper record keeping
Ensure accuracy in documentation
Conduct front‑office duties: greet patients, obtain authorization, check in/out, communicate wait times, answer multi‑line telephone system, and distribute employer results/paperwork as needed
Follow HIPAA guidelines and safety rules
Attend center staff meetings or huddles as required
Assist in maintaining a neat, clean, and orderly appearance throughout the facility
Complete applicable training, including monthly clinical competency training
Qualifications
Education: Vocational/Technical/Business School; graduate of an accredited medical assistant program with externship preferred, or at least one year of direct patient care experience as a medical assistant, or military medical specialist experience meeting state credentials
Minimum of six months of medical assistant experience
Knowledge of medical procedures, terminology, and occupational medicine requirements (state specific) preferred
Core competencies: Service mentality, attention to detail, sense of urgency, initiative, flexibility
Decision‑making and problem‑solving skills using logical analysis and quality solutions
Outstanding customer service skills and professionalism
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information (HIPAA/PHI) in compliance with federal and state laws
Strong verbal and written communication; professional tone
Teamwork focus with peers and leadership; maintain relationships with all levels of colleagues
Participation in initial and ongoing training as required
Certification as a Medical Support Specialist, including Drug Screen Collection, Breath Alcohol Certification, Hair and Oral Fluids Collection
Intermediate Microsoft Office knowledge (Word, Excel, Outlook) and data entry into various systems/applications

This position is eligible to earn a base compensation rate in the state range of $17.28 to $22.46 hourly, depending on job‑related factors such as level of experience, geographic location, and/or seniority.
