Overview
RN Inpatient Wound Nurse

Part‑time days, Monday‑Friday. 8 hour shift.

The inpatient wound nurse contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills specific to the provision and management of skin, ostomy and wound care to patients and their families. This is done through assessment, planning and implementation of skin, ostomy and wound care for individual patients, as well as educating and coaching nurses who are part of the unit care team. Maintains a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses and the Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers.

Responsibilities

Assesses the skin care needs of inpatients and plans, implements, and evaluates effective interventions in partnership with frontline nursing staff.

Develops an individual plan of care collaboratively with the patient/family and health care team.

Completes documentation promptly to assure an accurate legal record of patient care.

Delivers high‑quality care using the nursing process while demonstrating expertise in wound, ostomy and skin care.

Uses a holistic approach that considers biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to patient and family age.

Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.

Utilizes critical thinking for independent judgments and seeks collaboration when needed.

Assists with coordination of care across the continuum, including discharge planning.

Continues professional development and shares knowledge through networking and research.

Actively engages in instruction and education of inpatient nurses and PCTs on skin, ostomy, and wound care topics.

Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety are priorities by preventing errors, accidents, infections, and reporting concerns immediately.

Qualifications

Associate Degree in Nursing; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

One year of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency preferred.

Current license in Iowa or meets criteria established by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

Willingness to achieve wound certification; CWON preferred.

Writes, reads, and speaks fluent English.

Multicultural sensitivity.

Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office.

Customer/patient focus.

Critical thinking skills using independent judgment.
