Position Overview
The Veterinary Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing, dispensing, and managing medications for animal patients under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. This role supports the medical team by ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all pharmacy-related tasks while maintaining a high standard of patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and dispense medications as prescribed by veterinarians
Accurately calculate dosages based on species, weight, and condition
Maintain and manage pharmacy inventory, including ordering, stocking, and tracking expiration dates
Ensure proper labeling and packaging of all medications
Provide clear instructions to clients on medication administration
Maintain detailed and accurate medical and prescription records
Comply with all federal, state, and DEA regulations regarding controlled substances
Assist veterinarians and technicians with medication-related questions and treatment plans
Handle prescription refills and communicate with clients regarding medication needs
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy area
Identify and report discrepancies or concerns related to medications or inventory
Qualifications (Required)
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Veterinary assisting or pharmacy technician experience
Knowledge of veterinary pharmacology and common medications
Strong math and calculation skills
Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Strong communication and client service skills
Familiarity with veterinary software systems preferred
Preferred Skills
Knowledge of veterinary pharmacology and common medications
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods
Capability to lift and restrain animals as needed (with assistance when appropriate)
Manual dexterity for handling medications and equipment
Work Environment
Veterinary hospital
Exposure to animals, including those that may be stressed or in pain
Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous materials (with proper safety protocols)
Schedule
Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays
Mondays, Tuesdays and afternoons for Wednesday-Friday
Wednesday-Friday shifts are flexible and can be determined based on availability
