Medication Aide
Position Reports To
Licensed Vocational Nurse / Registered Nurse
Purpose of Job
Prepares, administers and records prescribed medication for residents in the facility under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares administers and documents regularly prescribed oral, rectal, eye, nasal medications to residents.
Observes and reports drug reactions and side effects of drugs commonly given in the facility.
Takes and records vital signs before administering certain drugs.
Assures that all notification and correction procedures regarding medication errors are executed.
Assures that medication room is locked when unattended; and
Uses judgement to discern tasks which only the licensed nurse may complete.
Medication Aides must not give initial doses of medication.
Medication Aides must not give injectable medication.
Medication Aides must not receive telephone or verbal doctor’s orders.
Administers P.R.N. drugs as needed, when authorized by appropriate authorities. Documents the administration given, dose route of administration, time and person who gave permission to administer drug.
Uses the physician’s desk reference or other appropriate drug reference.
Checks physician’s orders against medication forms and against medication cards.
Properly maintains medications.
Maintains a clean working environment.
Performs duties of Nursing Assistant. (The Medication Aide also receives a copy of the Nurse Assistant job description).
Qualifications and Requirements
Education: High School education preferred.
Training experience: Must have completed a state approved training program in medication.
Certification / Licenses: Medication Aide license.
Job Knowledge: Education or training for re‑certification must be completed according to Federal and State regulations.
Environmental, Physical, and Other Conditions
Works in a clean, well-lit, ventilated building.
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting to 50 pounds, handling, fingering, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching overhead, reaching forward, reaching low, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crouching, twisting motion, and balancing. Corrected vision to 20/20 and hearing to normal range.
Special Demands
Must demonstrate good judgement in seeking guidance and supervision from licensed personnel.
Additional Performance Responsibilities
All job responsibilities are to be performed and subject to change as deemed necessary by management.
Other primary and secondary functions may be required to be performed as determined by management.
Employee is required to comply with attendance and tardiness standards established by management.

Employee is required to know the facility exposure control plan, where this information is located and what actions needs to be taken when an accident occurs with blood or other infectious materials.
