Medical Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant
Full-time, Multispecialty Clinic, New Orleans, LA (University Medical Center).
As a Medical Assistant, you are on the front line of care. You develop a sixth sense for anticipating and addressing the needs of patients. You provide clinical and non‑clinical assistance to physicians, providers, and licensed staff in the management of patient flow and the environment of care, including answering phone messages, scheduling authorizations for procedures, surgeries, and deliveries, and stepping in as needed to cover other duties within the scope of non‑licensed staff.
General Duties
Clinical
Measures and records appropriate vital signs; identifies abnormal values and reports findings to the appropriate nursing staff or medical provider.
Assists with patient arrival, schedules new and follow‑up appointments, and facilitates a smooth patient exit from the clinic.
Recognizes emergencies and responds appropriately in adherence to organizational policy and procedure.
Provides comfort to patients, considering age and special needs.
Maintains and prepares clinic equipment, ensuring safety testing before use, cleaning, disinfecting between patients, and proper storage of linens and supplies.
Properly collects, prepares, and transports laboratory specimens for testing when necessary.
Documentation
Documents appropriately in the patient medical record according to established departmental guidelines.
Navigates the Electronic Medical Record to obtain laboratory and radiology results, outside medical records, updates demographic data, and schedules follow‑up appointments.
Prepares safety reports when warranted or as directed by the Clinic Manager.
Maintains privacy of patient personal health information by ensuring computer screens are secure in the absence of medical
ursing/clinical staff.
Professionalism and Support
Demonstrates honesty, promptness, dependability, courtesy, and respect in interactions with patients, caregivers, customers, co‑workers, and staff.
Consults and keeps clinic managers informed of activities, requirements, and problems.
Handles patient and/or co‑worker complaints calmly, positively, and non‑judgementally, reporting events to the clinic manager daily.
Maintains strict patient confidentiality, discussing issues only with appropriate persons in a suitable place and manner.
Safety and Infection Control
Implements standard and transmission‑based precautions, per hospital policy.
Ensures patient safety during clinic visits, reporting any hazards or violations to the Clinic Manager or designee.
Participates in Quality Improvement Process, including QAPI projects and EOC Rounds.
Clerical Support
Participates in the clinic preparation process by gathering appropriate clinical documentation for review by the medical provider.
Obtains medical records from outside facilities when needed or requested by the medical provider.
Scans outside correspondence into the appropriate area of the electronic medical record.
Answers the telephone and routes calls promptly to the appropriate person.
Must-Haves
High School diploma, GED, or equivalent, or 2 years of appropriate work experience.
Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
Certified Medical Assistant credentials are a plus:
American Association of Medical Assistants – Certified Medical Assistant
National Healthcareer Association – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
Certified Medical Assistant – NPCE
