High School Social Studies Teacher/Department Chair
BelovED Community & Empowerment Academy Charter Schools, Jersey City, NJ, United States
Overview
We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Social Studies teacher to join and lead our High School Social Studies department. BelovED's Social Studies program builds rigorous academic skills and knowledge, while engaging students in authentic, purposeful learning experiences that honor student voice and choice. We focus on building skills in critical literacy, primary source document analysis, writing, argumentation, research, and synthesis — the skills that students will need to succeed in college, career, and as engaged citizens. We build academic communities in our classrooms characterized by a willingness to take intellectual risks and engage in exploration.
Position and Team
As a department, we aim to create a teaching team characterized by collaboration, trust, transparency, mutual respect, and joint commitment to academic excellence and student well-being. We provide our teachers with extensive coaching and support. We offer a variety of history courses at the general and AP level, as well as elective courses, and we involve teachers in curriculum development and growing our course selection.
Responsibilities
Lead the High School Social Studies department and collaborate with teachers to create a positive, rigorous learning environment.
Commit to the School's values and mission; maintain high expectations for every student and support each student to achieve their potential.
Accept ultimate responsibility for student learning progress and actively develop solutions with peers and leaders, using available school resources.
Plan and deliver vibrant, engaging lessons — each with a measurable goal — within the framework of a sequenced, standards-aligned program.
Model and enforce the school\'s rules; use preventive discipline; supervise students in the classroom and on school grounds.
Participate in professional development and planning meetings; contribute to a professional learning community with grade-level peers.
Collaborate with the school\'s special education and ELL staff to implement programs and comply with regulations.
Requirements
Hold or plan to pursue a New Jersey Department of Education CE, CEAS or Standard certificate in Social Studies before teaching in NJ high schools.
Experience in inquiry-based teaching, teaching reading and writing in the content area, and infusion of primary sources into instruction.
Comfort creating lesson and unit plans (with support) and promoting student-centered learning; use assessment to inform instruction.
Benefits
Teacher supports: school-wide coaching, professional development, and PLC participation.
Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)

Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity)
