
Curator of Collections and Exhibitions

The Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA), fully accredited since 1988, seeks a qualified professional to serve as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. This is a full‑time position that reports to the Executive Director and requires relocating to Muskegon, MI (or a location within a commutable distance).
The MMA holds an impressive permanent collection of nearly 6,000 objects with a focus on paintings (particularly the work of 19th and 20th‑century American artists), sculpture, glass, women artists, and works on paper. Now in its 114th year, the MMA presents a wide variety of 10‑15 temporary exhibitions annually and enjoys visitors from all 50 states.
Primary Responsibilities
Management, development, safety, and care of the Museum’s growing collection in accordance with the American Association of Museums standards and applicable laws.
Development and implementation of a comprehensive exhibition schedule, including both temporary and permanent installations.
Leading acquisition efforts to grow the museum’s permanent collection in line with the Strategic Collections Plan.
Collections research, interpretation, and related publications; serving as the team leader of the Exhibitions Committee.
Building relationships with the community, other museums, artists, collectors, and the wider art museum world.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Principal oversight and coordination of the permanent collection, including display, interpretation, preservation, and conservation.
Participation in external activities, marketing, publicity, and fundraising; representation at scholarly, public, and social events.
Supervision of Collections Manager and preparator(s).
Development and implementation of a planned approach to temporary and traveling exhibitions.
Development of exhibition concepts, themes, and selection of objects; oversight of installations.
Primary contact for traveling exhibitions, ensuring appropriate communication with exhibition sources.
Collaboration with the Curator of Education for interpretive materials.
Presentation of public programs, lectures, and training sessions.
Initiation and development of research and publications related to exhibitions and the permanent collection.
Relationship development with collectors, dealers, and scholars.
Implementation of a strategy for acquiring items for the Museum’s permanent collection.
Staff liaison to selected MMA committees and support groups.
Assistance in developing the annual exhibition budget.
Participation in fundraising events.
Collaboration with other staff to achieve Museum objectives.
Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
Five years or more museum experience in a curatorial capacity with a demonstrable record of curatorial accomplishment.
Direct and demonstrable success in exhibition planning and execution.
Proven ability in external relations, marketing, publicity, fundraising, and event representation.
Direct experience in collections management.
Strong collaboration, volunteer workforce management, and supervisory experience.
Creative thinking, flexibility, and sensitivity to diverse constituencies.
Strong budgeting and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Dynamic leadership skills.
Record of academic research with professional publications in art and art history.
Current knowledge of museum standards and practices.
Competency with word processing, databases, and museum software.
Previous experience in at least two comparable museums strongly preferred.
Educational Requirements
Minimum of a Master of Arts in art history or a related museum/curatorial discipline.
Demonstrable broad art historical competence; specialization related to the MMA’s permanent collection strongly preferred.
