Job Summary
Under indirect supervision, performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations and produces two‑dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs. These images are used by physicians to diagnose disease processes and to delineate both normal and abnormal human anatomy, including the abdomen, breast, musculoskeletal system, pelvis, gravid uterus, and other areas of the body. The role also includes obstetric exams (e.g., maternal uterus, adnexa, fetal biophysical profile, amniocentesis) and interventional procedures such as biopsies, aspirations, and drainage procedures.

Essential Responsibilities

Upholds Kaiser Permanente policies, procedures, and applicable laws, and maintains a professional demeanor toward patients and coworkers.

Provides culturally sensitive care, recognizing the impact of diversity on patient needs.

Operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment (real‑time, mobile) to obtain quality images and performs special applications such as surgical assistance, localization, aspiration, and biopsy.

Selects appropriate transducers, adjusts equipment settings based on organ of interest and test specifications, and moves the transducer manually to optimize image quality.

Documents test data and patient information in the ultrasound system, generating reports on magnetic tape, computer disk, strip printout, or film, and photographs image displays as needed.

Processes and prepares images for interpretation, discusses results with physicians, and uses ancillary devices such as selective transducers and monitors.

Scans anatomical areas using B‑mode, M‑mode, and real‑time techniques, optimizes display parameters, and notes structure significance and artifacts.

Records signal response, produces diagnostic images considering transducer selection, technical factors, patient variables, image annotation, and quality criteria.

Maintains accurate, timely clinical activity documentation, follows regional and departmental policies, and manages equipment, supplies, and work area to meet guidelines.

Demonstrates effective communication skills and professional maturity in all interactions with patients and staff.

Basic Qualifications

NT certification required when performing Nuchal Translucency procedures in the OB‑GYN department (Job Code 30818).

Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to operate ultrasound equipment, recognize normal anatomy and pathology, and produce quality images.

Consistently provides superior, culturally sensitive service to patients, members, and stakeholders.

Education

Specialty registration in abdominal, cardiac, cardiovascular, or vascular sonography may be required depending on the assignment.

License, Certification, Registration

Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate – American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers

Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate – OB‑GYN (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers)

Nuchal Translucency Certification

Basic Life Support

Preferred Qualifications

At least 2 years of clinical experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in an acute‑care medical center.

Notes

In accordance with CBA requirements, a minimum of 10 days per month must be provided: 4 weekend days and 6 weekdays.

The position is staffed at Baldwin Park, MOB, and main hospital service areas.

All ultrasound exams and quality control will be performed as needed.

This is a per‑diem position; working days and hours may vary within the specified shift.
