
Patient Access Coordinator I - 12:00pm to 8:30pm Swing shift (ED)

Overview
Customer service liaison for the first impression of the medical center. Greets patients, obtains all demographical information, collects regulatory data (HIPAA, Medicare, Mass Pro, JACHO, DPH, EMTALA, Subscriber, Health Care Proxy), obtains appropriate signatures from patients, and provides regulatory paperwork. Verifies insurance eligibility and collects copays. Identifies patients through EMPI search and re-verifies with the patient. Prints appropriate paperwork and escorts patients to locations. Answers telephones and performs quality checks of registrations. Assists all hospital departments to facilitate accurate registration of patients. Manages day-to-day bed placement including scheduled, urgent, and emergency admissions, transfers, discharges, and death procedures. Works closely with scheduling and precertification areas within Patient Access.
Responsibilities
Accurate occurrence codes
Provide superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards
Obtain accurate patient information and enter into the Meditech computer system
Choose correct medical record number
Verify and update all demographical information (date of birth, address, maiden name, social security number)
Verify and update all insurance information
Record accurate reason for visit; accurate physician (primary care, attending, referring)
Verify locations and status; accurate services; accurate occurrence codes
Obtain regulatory data and Health Care Proxy/advance directives
HIPAA notices; Medicare secondary payer questions; Medicare rights/related plans
Capture race and ethnic background
Check insurance eligibility according to policies and verify insurance in the computer
Obtain signatures according to policies; general consent of treatment; HIPAA privacy notice; financial releases
Check daily registrations for quality; run revenue log daily and pass into assigned lead
Assign beds for patients according to service and diagnosis; maintain current census and admission log
Perform transfers and activations in a timely manner
Maintain confidentiality at all times; answer phones with name and department within 3 rings
Know all downtime procedures; be knowledgeable on death process; obtain death reports
Complete organ bank sheet and report death to organ bank (except for ED); complete death certificate and death log
Cross-train to several Patient Access areas; assume front desk responsibilities as needed
Follow all departmental policies and procedures
Non-Essential Functions (Responsibilities)
Ensure the area is stocked for the next shift
Clean printers, faxes, and the area at shift end
Maintain refrigerator cleanliness; notify supervisor if supplies are low
Dispose of confidential papers appropriately
Qualifications
Minimum Education: High School Graduate or GED; Some College preferred
Minimum Experience: 2-4 years in a health care setting with medical terminology and registration/check-in experience preferred; insurance knowledge preferred
Minimum Skills/Abilities: Ability to multitask; excellent customer service skills; excellent communication skills
Hours: 12:00pm-8:30pm
Compensation
Compensation Range: $20.70 - $30.76
This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications.
