Job Description
A Mental Health Security Technician at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem monitors and controls access points, conducts video surveillance, and performs interior and exterior patrols to prevent security breaches and unauthorized access. The role also includes emergency response, patient behavior management, development and implementation of security protocols, patient transportation, incident reporting, customer service, and additional support tasks such as assisting with admissions, processing mail, and handling evidence.
Responsibilities
Monitor access points and control entry/exit to the facility.
Conduct video surveillance monitoring.
Perform interior and exterior patrols for security breaches.
Respond to emergencies and call for assistance.
Manage patient conduct and provide physical intervention assistance.
Develop and implement security protocols and maintain knowledge of laws and regulations.
Provide transportation for patients to in‑house and off‑campus appointments, using restraints as necessary.
Prepare clear incident reports and related documents.
Provide customer service to patients, staff, and visitors.
Assist with patient admissions, mail processing, contact Oregon State Police as needed, distribute badges and keys, and collect and process evidence.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience providing security services; or
One year of experience providing direct care to patients in a mental health setting.
Desired Attributes
Mental Health or hospital experience – understanding of mental health conditions, trauma‑informed care.
Security or law‑enforcement experience – relevant experience in security, law enforcement, or corrections.
Security camera / alarm monitoring experience.
De‑escalation skills – ability to manage conflict and use non‑violent interventions.
Leadership skills – motivation, ethical behavior, discretion, and sound decision making.
Team collaboration – works well with clinical staff, hospital leadership, and peers.
Crisis response – ability to respond calmly and effectively in high‑stress situations.
Written and verbal communication skills – clarity, empathy, and professionalism.
Special Requirements
Must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OHA criteria at the time of hire and throughout employment.
