Mid-Level Practitioner – Elmore, AL
This posting is open exclusively to current AL DOC incumbent employees.
As a Correctional Mid-Level Practitioner, you will work alongside correctional officers and other medical professionals to provide care to the incarcerated population. Working within a controlled environment where security is top priority, you will have various duties to keep you engaged, including assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with a range of medical conditions and chronic illnesses, prescribing medications, responding to emergencies, and making a difference in this diverse population.
Responsibilities
Conduct physical examinations, develop treatment plans, and monitor patients.
Manage acute and chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.
Administer medications and provide instructions to patients.
Monitor and document patient health including vital signs and medical histories.
Provide direct patient care, triage, assess patient needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services.
Respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities.
Educate patients on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention.
Understand and adhere to correctional facility security protocols while working closely with correctional officers and healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety and well-being.
Maintain accurate medical records, document treatment plans, and report relevant information.
Conduct rounds and evaluate patients returning from off‑site treatment.
Admit and discharge patients from the facility.
Qualifications
Advanced nursing education (Master’s or Doctorate).
Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner.
Unrestricted NP license in AL.
Current DEA registration.
Collaborative agreement with onsite Physician.
Active BLS/CPR Certification (AHA preferred).
Board recognition by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Knowledge of nursing practice principles, occupational health and safety, infectious disease management, applicable laws, regulations, and procedures for direct healthcare services.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Experience in a correctional facility or acute care center is a plus.
Ability to interact with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with mental health or substance abuse issues.
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to Code of Conduct and facility policies.
Pass facility criminal background check and drug screening.
Physical Capabilities
Must be able to stand for long periods, lift and move patients up to 50 pounds, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks such as CPR while maintaining balance and endurance throughout a shift.
