Job Summary
Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care to non‑acutely ill patients, and assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse in charge of the team and/or unit.
Competencies
Provides basic nursing care to non‑acutely ill patients within the nursing assistant’s scope of practice, addressing psychosocial and physical needs.
Offers general care that meets psychosocial or physical needs, or both, within scope.
Meets communication needs of patients.
Demonstrates initiative and responsibility expected of a nursing assistant.
Performs other duties as assigned within scope.
Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patient.
Performs basic patient care responsibilities considering age‑specific standards of care.
Notifies licensed staff when a patient complains of pain.
Communicates observed changes in patient status and responses to the nurse; remains aware of needs of pediatric, geriatric, and general populations.
Assists with feeding patients and maintaining fluid balance using techniques appropriate to age and physical condition.
Explains care to patient and family before administering, answering questions within scope.
Performs treatments and provides services within scope of practice.
Communicates appropriately with team leader, coworkers and physicians.
Consults with other departments as appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach.
Provides care appropriate to patient condition and age, including pediatric, geriatric and general populations.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces errors.
Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
Shows flexibility, organization and ability to function under stressful situations.
Responds to patients in emergency or physically distressing situations.
Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves them in care planning.
Maintains good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
Meets current documentation standards and policies within shift limits.
Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Coordinates and supervises patient care under direct RN supervision.
Demonstrates knowledge of disease entities.
Professional Requirements
Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
Maintains regulatory requirements, including federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch‑time system correctly.
Completes in‑services and returns in a timely fashion.
Attends annual review and department in‑services as scheduled.
Attends 12 staff meetings annually or reads and returns monthly staff meeting minutes.
Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital and the department focus statement.
Regulatory Requirements
Preferred: High School graduate or equivalent.
Successful completion of certified nursing assistant program.
Current BLS certification.
Language Skills
Fluent in English, both verbally and in writing.
Additional languages preferred.
Skills
Basic computer knowledge.
Physical Demands
Mobility, sight, hearing, verbal communication, ability to tolerate temperature changes and exposure to disagreeable elements, biological, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards.
Frequent standing and walking; lifting up to 100 pounds; carrying up to 40 pounds; pushing/pulling up to 450 pounds.
