Job Summary
The University of North Georgia is accepting applications for a Department Head in the Counseling Department. As the chief administrative and academic officer of the department, the head has the authority and responsibility for delivery of academic programs, hiring and evaluation of department personnel, and budgeting and resource management, subject to approval by the Dean and the Provost. The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Health & Wellness (or designated designee) and coordinates departmental activity with the College and University. The position involves collaboration with other units in the College and University to develop and implement College initiatives.
Responsibilities
Department Leadership
Work with faculty, students, and staff to establish and maintain a long-term vision for the department that aligns with the institutional missions.
Assess the department’s progress in meeting goals.
Recommend departmental programs, policies, procedures, and practices.
Ensure compliance with College, University, System, and State rules and regulations.
Coordinate departmental participation in Scholastic Honors Convocation.
Department Curriculum
Oversee development of classes from conceptualization to approval by curriculum committees.
Complete scheduled comprehensive program reviews per USG regulations, Georgia State Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, and CACREP.
Complete program assessment in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
Communicate and collaborate with program coordinators and campus entities on curriculum matters.
Coordinate submission of reports required by accreditation and sanctioning agencies (SACS, BOR, Georgia Board of Licensed Counselors, CACREP).
Initiate new academic programs and projects when appropriate.
Department Operations
Manage daily operations of the department.
Develop and submit class schedules.
Review and revise the university catalog regarding departmental requirements.
Monitor course registrations and adjust schedules and instructor assignments in cooperation with the Dean’s Office and campus coordinators.
Review and approve/deny grade change and override requests.
Coordinate implementation of academic policies and regulations.
Communicate departmental activities to the Dean’s Office and other UNG departments.
Communicate state agencies’ policies and legislation to the department.
Support departmental initiatives on all UNG campuses, including the Community Counseling Clinic in Dahlonega.
Budgeting
Manage resources for departmental and program objectives.
Develop and monitor the budget with the dean and department.
Review and approve funding requests for departmental projects.
Ensure expenditures comply with college, university, and state fiscal practices.
Personnel
Initiate hiring and recruitment of full‑time and part‑time faculty.
Evaluate faculty through annual performance reviews and professional development plans.
Evaluate tenure, promotion, and post‑tenure applications.
Recommend faculty development awards and grants to the Dean.
Approve faculty travel and reimbursements.
Recommend compensation increases based on evaluation.
Participate in appeals processes for grievances.
Supervise student personnel.
Recruit, appoint, supervise, and evaluate staff members.
Coordinate course load scheduling.
Collaborate with Human Resources on faculty and staff issues.
Students
Coordinate student recruitment for the department.
Supervise student advisement and review of degree progress.
Evaluate student transfer credit.
Review student appeals and course override requests.
Meet with students on concerns about classes, faculty, and policies.
Cooperate with the Center for Accommodation and Access on student accommodations.
Review and recommend travel requests.
Coordinate recruitment, retention, and visitation activities with faculty and admissions.
Management and Recordkeeping
Supervise maintenance of departmental records.
Ensure departmental documents and websites are updated.
Meetings
Schedule and lead departmental meetings.
Participate in College of Health & Wellness Leadership Team meetings.
Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
Faculty Responsibilities
Teach, research, and conduct scholarly activities in line with the department’s mission and leadership duties.
Assist faculty in university and community service activities.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
In-depth knowledge of department programs, including requirements, policy, procedure, operation, and management; knowledge of accreditation requirements for SACS.
Required Qualifications
Earned doctorate from a CACREP‑accredited counselor education program or equivalent.
Evidence of research, tenure, and teaching experience in higher education.
Rank of associate professor or higher.
Leadership experience with the profession or university.
Excellent communication and human‑relation skills.
Licensed or license‑eligible in the state of Georgia.
Documented performance in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in administration of higher education programs, including strategic planning, budgeting, operations, and collaboration.
Active supervision credential (ACCS or CPCS).
