Job Description
Be a part of a world‑class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Pharmacy Technician II in the Inpatient Pharmacy. In this role you will prepare medications and supplies for dispensation under the supervision of a pharmacist and rotate through all work areas of the pharmacy department. The Inpatient Pharmacy supports and provides direct patient care to patients of all ages and populations. You will facilitate timely distribution of medications, prioritize orders, and comply with all regulatory policies. You will also prepare outpatient prescriptions, perform cashiering duties, and assist in training new pharmacists and technician employees.
Essential Job Functions
Transport medications, IVs, TPNs, chemotherapy, medication cassettes, and other pharmacy supplies to nursing units and clinics.
Maintain Omnicell machines and return discontinued or outdated medications.
Replace CPR cart medications following Dr. Cart events and transfer patient‑specific medications during unit transfers.
Work as a team player; rotate through all pharmacy work areas, fill first doses, restock, perform monthly inspections, maintain work areas, and answer phone calls.
Triage phone communications, collect quality assurance data, maintain workload records, and perform other duties within legal scope as assigned.
Prepare medications for dispensing under pharmacist supervision, including prepackaging bulk meds, compiling IV admixtures, chemotherapy, desensitization meds, high‑cost biologics, and pediatric IVs; restock CPR cart trays.
Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies from the storeroom, receive drugs, and stock shelves in pharmacy locations.
Prioritize orders and seek pharmacist confirmation when necessary, emphasizing STAT order handling.
Complete required annual technician competencies in a timely manner.
Prepare outpatient prescriptions and perform cashiering duties in the outpatient pharmacy as needed.
Assist in training new pharmacists and technician employees.
Perform other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications
Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician License.
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
IV room non‑hazardous and hazardous compounding required.
Minimum one year pharmacy experience, or completion of an ASHP‑approved pharmacy technician vocational course, or enrollment in a college pharmacy program or at the University of Chicago; graduates of foreign pharmacy programs are also eligible.
Team‑player ability to accomplish optimal patient care.
Good communication skills to interact with patients and staff.
Knowledge of basic pharmacy practices and procedures.
Knowledge of medications and medical supplies.
Knowledge of record‑keeping practices.
Successful completion of core technician competencies and subsequent yearly competencies.
Attention to detail and strong verbal communication skills.
Familiarity with computers and keyboard usage.
Sensitivity to patient care issues pertaining to pharmacy practice.
Preferred Qualifications
Illinois Pharmacy Technician Certification is highly desirable.
