EMT: $17.00–$22.67

AEMT: $17.93–$26.16

Position Summary
Provides emergency medical care, both on‑scene and during transport, to patients in the hospital's service area. The role involves direct patient care utilizing basic (BLS) or advanced (ALS) skills, responding to 911 calls, assisting with patient transfers, and collaborating closely with hospital staff.

Responsibilities

Facility, Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance:

Maintain cleanliness and organization of staff offices, sleep rooms, and garages.

Perform routine equipment checks and vehicle inspections.

Ensure ambulance cleanliness and organization.

Maintain adequate supply levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.

Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns immediately.

Emergency Response, Patient Care & Transport:

Respond promptly to emergency medical calls and requests for assistance.

Assess patient conditions quickly and accurately in emergency situations.

Provide appropriate emergency medical care based on training level and protocols.

Stabilize patients for safe transport to medical facilities.

Monitor patients continuously during transport and provide ongoing care.

Administer medications and perform medical procedures within scope of practice.

Operate emergency medical equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Communicate effectively with patients and families during stressful situations.

Maintain patient safety, confidentiality, and dignity at all times.

Communication & Documentation:

Review all staff communication tools at least once per shift.

Respond to scheduling communications promptly.

Complete detailed, accurate, and timely patient care reports for all calls.

Communicate patient information clearly and accurately to the healthcare team.

Coordinate with dispatch, law enforcement, fire department, and other emergency personnel as needed.

Complete payroll book entries at the end of each shift.

Complete all hospital required documentation accurately and timely.

Safety & Quality:

Follow all safety guidelines.

Participate in quality improvement activities and case reviews.

Clinical & Non‑Clinical Assistance:

Provide clinical assistance within scope of practice to other departments upon request.

Provide non‑clinical assistance to the organization upon request (e.g., security rounds).

EMS Knowledge & Skills Maintenance:

Maintain EMS clinical knowledge through continuing education.

Maintain EMS skills competency commensurate with clinical protocols and certification level.

Education & Community Outreach:

Provide education and training for organization (e.g., AHA programs).

Participate in public health initiatives, education, and community outreach activities and programs.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

Certification and Licensing:

Current State of Iowa certification as an EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, Paramedic‑CCP, or RN Exempt.

Current Iowa "Class C – Operator" driver's license with a clean driving record.

Current AHA BLS certification.

Current AHA ACLS certification (for Paramedic, Paramedic‑CCP, or RN Exempt).

Current State of Iowa Mandatory Reporter training (child and dependent adult).

Education & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Completion of state‑approved EMS training program or nursing program.

Previous EMS experience preferred but not required for entry‑level positions.

Technical Skills:

Basic office/computer knowledge.

Medical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical conditions and procedures.

Teamwork, communication, situational awareness and resilience.

Emergency vehicle operation and patient transportation.

Rapid patient assessment and emergency medical care (first aid, CPR, airway management, oxygen administration, medication administration).

Equipment operation (defibrillators, ventilators, IV equipment).

Documentation accuracy.

Soft skills – empathy, decision‑making, problem‑solving, leadership, stress management, emotional resilience, physical stamina, initiative, interpersonal skills.

Annual Mandatory Education & Training:

Physical Demands & Working Conditions
Physically demanding work including lifting and carrying patients and equipment up to 100 lb, and performing tasks that involve standing, walking, crouching, and operating hand and foot controls. Typical work involves pre‑hospital environments ranging from mild to extreme conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Required physical capabilities: ability to lift up to 100 lb, perform repetitive hand movements, maintain balance on slippery or uneven surfaces, and endure variable temperature extremes.

Required sensory capabilities: hearing and vision within normal limits; ability to operate medical equipment and respond to alarms.

Environmental conditions: exposure to temperature extremes, vibration, noise, and potential hazards. Personal protective equipment includes eye protection, hearing protection, chemical resistant clothing, gloves, and surgical or N95 masks. Protective gear such as a hard hat is not required.
