Summary Of Primary Function / General Purpose Of Position
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop clinical pharmacists responsible for medication‑related care across a wide range of conditions. These residents are eligible for board certification and for proceeding to postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Essential Job Functions
Perform duties of a staff pharmacist as required.
Establish and maintain clinical knowledge and practice that supports the needs of the ministry.
Instruct and precept pharmacy students as assigned.
Conduct basic patient assessments appropriate for scope of practice (e.g., assess for bruising or bleeding in patients on warfarin therapy).
Act as liaison among nursing services, pharmacy services, and medical staff in developing, implementing, and maintaining clinical pharmacy programs.
Successfully complete required rotational and longitudinal rotations under the guidance of residency preceptors and select elective rotations to complete.
Recruited participants at the ASHP Midyear Conference for upcoming resident classes and support other recruiting opportunities as requested by residency program preceptors.
Participate actively on committees related to areas of clinical practice expertise and/or interest area. Complete residency project as approved by residency program preceptors, with results presented at staff discretion.
Perform other duties within the scope of practice as assigned by supervisor.
Obey and adhere to all hospital and facility policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; consult the Department of Pharmacy policies and procedure manual for residents and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Mercy Health Care Services.
Licensing / Certification
Must be licensed and in good standing in the state where the residency takes place within 90 days of the residency start date, as outlined in the residency handbook or contract.

Working Conditions
Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
General office environment.
Possible exposure to physical altercations and verbal abuse.

Long‑distance or air travel up to 10% of the time.
Exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
Exposure to adverse weather conditions (cold, hot, dust, wind, etc.).
Periods of constant interruptions and prolonged periods of working alone.
Required car travel to off‑site locations in adverse weather.
Universal precautions and use personal protective equipment, following infection control policies.
