Job Overview
An Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in eating disorders provides specialized, comprehensive care by assessing physical and mental health, diagnosing conditions (anorexia, bulimia, BED), prescribing medications, and conducting psychotherapy. They lead multidisciplinary teams, coordinate care, develop nutritional intervention plans, monitor safety, and support families, aiming to reduce care disparities and promote recovery.

Shift Schedule

Three Days/Week 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Flexible

On call every third weekend 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Sat/Sun

Essential Functions

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) will work with a supervising Psychiatrist to provide care for patients identified as having serious and persistent mental illness.

The practice settings include the psychiatric in-patient units and outpatient areas of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.

The Advanced Practice Nurse possesses expertise in the management of complex responses of individuals, families and communities to actual or potential health problems.

The APN will conduct psychiatric evaluations, health assessments and monitor medication side effect.

Psychosocial therapies, medication education/counseling and treatment planning will be provided for clients and families.

The APN will prescribe medications required to maintain client stabilization.

The APN serves as nursing leader, consultant, researcher, educator and direct care provider.

The APN within the Nursing Leadership role provides a visible and accessible clinical presence to the health care team.

As Consultant, the APN facilitates problem solving with individuals, families, group agencies, communities and or interdisciplinary colleagues (within and outside of the clinical setting).

As Educator, the APN promotes learning efforts of clients, staff, and students within the clinical setting, area schools and institutions of higher learning.

The APN as Researcher promotes scientific inquiry in clinical practice and uses research process and findings to improve nursing practice.

The APN as Practitioner, models excellence in practice through direct care to selected patients or groups.

The APN takes responsibility for enhancement of his/her own professional development.
