Job Summary
The Medical Assistant is a multi‑skilled clinical professional who provides indirect and/or direct patient care within the scope of practice, aligning with standards of excellence and quality. Responsibilities include recording vitals and other patient data, documenting patient/family needs, planning and implementing care, and administering ordered medications per medical‑assistant scope and state guidelines.
Essential Functions
Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the Medical Assistant role.
Identifies significant changes in patient condition through data collection and reports them to the provider.
Troubleshoots issues and escalates problems to provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.
Maintains clinical and administrative skills per the departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
Shows patients to examination rooms and prepares them for the physician.

Education
High School/GED (required)
Enrollment in an approved Medical Assistant program (required within 30 days employment)
Required Licensing & Certifications
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assistants (required within 12 months of start date)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists (required within 12 months of start date)
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Healthcareer Association (NHA) (required within 12 months of start date)
Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (not accepted in South Carolina)
Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA); National Association for Health Professionals (not accepted in South Carolina)
Assessment‑Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR‑OE) (acceptable if unable to obtain MA certification, not accepted in South Carolina)
BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations; preferable at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
Experience
Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred)
1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred)
Skills & Abilities
Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height.
Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
Provide authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by provider.
Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
Successfully complete skills or competency checklists to help physicians examine and treat patients, performing tasks such as handing instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, and changing dressings on wounds.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Collaborative teamwork with patients, families, and teams in a high‑volume environment.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Attention to detail.
Ability to multitask.
Proficiency with standard office equipment (computer, copier, phone, fax machine).
