Lift Station Mechanic

Position Purpose
The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance in the daily inspection, preventative maintenance, and repair of the mechanical and electrical equipment at the lift stations. The position’s work week consists of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lift station mechanics are required to be in a rotation for emergency stand‑by calls.

Essential Duties

Exercise valves, maintain and repair lift station motors, pumps, meters, generators and other major mechanical, electrical and hydraulic units of equipment, and the physical structure in accordance with blueprints or manuals.

Dismantle machinery or equipment to gain access to defective parts and repair or replace them using various tools.

Clean and lubricate equipment according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Inspect each station as required, read flow meters and gauges, generator run hours, electric meters, and record them. Interpret the status of the station.

Puts holding tanks in and out of service in high flow or maintenance situations.

Perform preventative maintenance on lift station equipment and keep records of work done.

Perform general station maintenance to keep stations neat and orderly.

Work in conjunction with the sewer cleaning crew and plant staff to identify abnormal and high flow situations as well as causes for lift station alarms and malfunctions.

Navigate a computer screen and interpret SCADA system and GIS data. Work with computerized maintenance program work orders and update computer information.

Become familiar with CMOM and understand the ramifications of a by‑pass in the collection system. Familiarize with the Racine collection system and safety sites.

Set up 6‑inch portable pumps and generators. Perform plumbing and welding as required.

Be trained in confined space entry regulations and perform entries.

Adhere to all Racine Wastewater Utility safety procedures and Utility work and safety rules.

Physical and Mental Ability Requirements

Use various data and information such as instruction pamphlets, blueprints, line diagrams, meters, gauges, operation and maintenance manuals, charts, and graphs.

Communicate orally and in writing with utility personnel, vendor representatives, and the general public.

Apply ethical judgment, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy when dealing with stakeholders.

Exert strenuous physical effort to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs., manipulate tools, and work at odd angles.

Work under pressure during high flow conditions, possibly beyond eight hours, and be on call during nights, weekends, and holidays.

Wear personal protective equipment such as goggles, face shields, gloves, boots, steel‑toed shoes, masks, respirators, and ear protection.

Work outdoors under severe weather conditions and in confined and cramped spaces, including sewers, wet wells, siphon chambers, tunnels, and basins exposed to odors, chemicals, noise, and electrical hazards.

Hand tools, power tools, welder, hoists, gas torch, power washer, steam cleaner, fire hoses, shovels, snow blowers, power vehicles, Bobcat, forklift, step ladders, extension ladders, hydraulic lifts, electronic diagnostic equipment, manhole cover removal device, confined space entry equipment, gas detector, computers, lifting equipment/crane, miscellaneous tools.

Software: maintenance software, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Antero Maintenance Tracking Software, City Works, GIS, TMS.

Qualifications

High school graduation or GED equivalent.

At least 5 years of verifiable professional mechanical experience with pumps, compressors, blowers, or engines in industrial plant or commercial automotive maintenance.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Collection Systems Subgrade (SS) certification within 1 year of hire.

Computer skills: SCADA systems, City Works, GIS.

Valid state‑issued motor vehicle operating license and Class B CDL with tanker endorsement within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications

Mechanical training and certification in HVAC, pipefitting or electro‑mechanical technology.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Plan work and utilize materials efficiently.

Diagnose and correct mechanical failures and defects.

Snow plow and landscape duties.

Good mechanical aptitude demonstrated by past experience.
