
Machinist (Research Technician 3/4)

What You Will Do
You will work independently and as part of the Target Fabrication and Engineering Team in the Engineered Materials Group. Your primary duties include receiving fabrication drawings, collaborating with fabrication technicians to develop fabrication plans, designing and fabricating hardware, programming, assembling and disassembling components, testing and modifying systems, operating advanced tools to produce parts to exact tolerances, interpreting engineering blueprints and specifications, conducting operational tests and fault isolation, recommending modifications, troubleshooting, documenting findings, reporting results, and performing in‑process quality control and inspection according to statistical process control or other control procedures.
Responsibilities by Level
Research Tech 3
– 3 years of experience machining custom fabrications from drawings, ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, experience with CAD/CAM software, technical objective achievement, collaboration in a team environment, and optional formal training with lathes, mills, drill presses, saws, and other industrial apparatus.
Research Tech 4
– 5+ years of experience machining custom fabrications from drawings, Accredited Journeyman Machinist qualification, same abilities and team collaboration as Tech 3, and optional advanced training as above.
Qualifications
Accredited Machinist Certificate qualification (required for Research Tech 4).
Accredited Journeyman Machinist qualification (required for Research Tech 4).
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Experience with CAD and CAM software.
Technical objective achievement.
Team collaboration and communication.
Optional formal training with lathes, mills, drill presses, saws, and other industrial apparatus.
Education & Experience
Research Tech 3 – Associate’s Degree and 3 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Research Tech 4 – Associate’s Degree and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with ultra‑precision fabrication techniques.
Active Q clearance.
Work Location
Hybrid (partial onsite/partial off‑site) in Los Alamos, NM; within a two‑hour ground commute.
Position Commitment
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a continuous service period of one year to remain eligible for other laboratory positions.
