Summary
The Physical Therapist evaluates, diagnoses, and treats patients with physical impairments to improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life. Working in hospitals, clinics, or rehabilitation centers, they create personalized, evidence‑based treatment plans using exercise and manual therapy to help patients recover and become independent. This role requires strong clinical skills, effective communication, critical thinking, and a commitment to high‑quality patient care.
Essential Work Functions
Evaluate patients’ physical conditions using standardized tests, clinical examinations, and patient history to identify functional limitations and treatment need
Develop personalized rehabilitation programs based on assessment findings and patient goals
Implement physical therapy treatment plans using various techniques to improve patient mobility and reduce pain
Operate specialized equipment and modalities safely, ensuring proper maintenance and calibration
Assess patient progress, adjust treatment plans, and accurately document interventions in the medical record
Collaborate with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care
Educate patients and caregivers on home exercise programs, body mechanics, injury‑prevention, and self‑management
Maintain a safe environment by adhering to infection control protocols and safety guidelines
Engage in quality assurance initiatives and professional development to stay current with best practices
Participate in discharge planning to ensure smooth transitions to community or home settings
Perform other duties as assigned within scope of practice
Required Essential Skills
Critical thinking, service excellence, and strong interpersonal communication skills
Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and competency in PC skills
Physical Abilities
– Must be able to remain stationary, move, lift equipment (50‑100 lbs), push, pull, and bend
Interpersonal Skills
– Must work effectively with diverse personnel to demonstrate a positive attitude and professionalism
Technical/Motor Skills
– Must grasp, perform fine manipulation, push/pull, and move around when assisting with procedures or equipment use
Mental Requirements
– Must cope with frequent public contact and meet deadlines under pressure, work with or without close supervision, manage irregular activity schedules, and maintain concentration to detail
Sensory
– Must possess visual acuity and effective communication ability
