Job Summary
Performs procedures including phlebotomy, specimen collection, processing, customer service, and quality assurance in compliance with Kaiser Permanente’s Code of Conduct, Principles of Responsibility, and applicable laws and regulations. Works under the technical guidance of the Laboratory Supervisor or Manager.

Essential Responsibilities

Greets and accurately identifies members following KP member experience standards.

Collects blood samples from all patient populations using age‑appropriate venipuncture or capillary puncture in accordance with KP policies.

Instructs patients on collection and packaging of other specimens such as urine, semen, feces, and timed collections.

Assesses specimen integrity, prepares, packages, and arranges for transport in accordance with KPMAS laboratory procedures and DOT regulations, including special transport when necessary.

Processes specimens, including racking, creating work lists, and loading instruments.

Collects and picks up specimens from clinical departments and transports stat specimens to the lab testing area following designated workflows.

Disposes of biological waste, needles, and related hazardous materials according to laboratory safety, infection control practices, and federal, state, and local laws.

Responds to internal and external inquiries via phone, email, or text to ensure resolution and customer satisfaction.

Provides orientation and practical training to new hires and students.

Follows defined laboratory procedures and maintains awareness of procedural changes.

Maintains a clean, adequately stocked, and safe work environment.

Performs administrative duties such as preparation and distribution of reports and pending log resolution.

Adheres to laboratory quality service standards, monitors waiting room and turnaround times, and reports delays or issues to supervisors.

Completes all required trainings on time and maintains licensing and certificate maintenance requirements, including annual CEUs and KP‑assigned CEUs.

Communicates specimen inquiries, problems, and investigations to appropriate staff in a timely manner according to established procedures.

Documents member, provider, and customer compliments, concerns, or complaints, resolving issues or escalating them as needed.

Provides assistance to peers, clinical staff, and providers, fostering a professional, collaborative, and positive work environment.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum one year of laboratory experience that includes six months of full‑time (or equivalent) work in a medical environment involving phlebotomy, patient reception, and related clerical duties, or successful completion of a Phlebotomy Clinical Rotation in a Kaiser Permanente Laboratory with 120 unassisted venipunctures, including at least ten pediatric collections.

Current KP Coalition employees are exempt from this experience requirement.

Education

Graduation from an accredited or Kaiser‑approved phlebotomy program or medical assistant program that includes phlebotomy training.

Proper documentation for education required (e.g., copy of diploma and/or U.S. international equivalency report); individuals with foreign diplomas must provide an international equivalency report.

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

Registered Phlebotomy Technician (AMT) within 12 months of hire, or Phlebotomy Technician Certificate within 12 months of hire, or Phlebotomy Technologist Certificate within 12 months of hire.

Basic Life Support certification from American Heart Association within 6 months of hire.

Additional Requirements

Must pass Kaiser Permanente phlebotomy written exam with a minimum score of 80%.

Must pass pre‑hire skills and knowledge test of basic computer skills.

Must maintain certifications current and complete annual CEUs to meet CLIA regulations and licensing requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Pediatric and neonatal phlebotomy experience.
