Overview
The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications seeks an outstanding faculty member for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Data Journalism position in the journalism department. Candidates should possess deep professional expertise in data journalism and demonstrate a record of data‑driven reporting in professional newsroom settings. The role involves teaching, research, and collaboration across the department and the Bellisario Media Center.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in data‑driven journalism, including computational methods, data analysis, statistical literacy, and visualization.
Develop and deliver workshops and seminars on working with large datasets, APIs, public records, and newsroom data workflows.
Integrate data analysis with traditional people‑reporting to produce engaging stories for diverse audiences.
Collaborate with faculty in the department, the Curley Center for Sports Journalism, the News Lab, and the Centre County Report to strengthen data journalism infrastructure.
Contribute to the growth of student‑run newsrooms and support students in developing data‑journalistic practice.
Engage in scholarly research related to data journalism, ethics, and accountability.
Qualifications
Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field by August 2026.
Significant professional experience as a data journalist, including reporting, editing, or leading data teams in a newsroom environment.
Hands‑on proficiency with data‑journalism tools such as Python, R, or SQL, and the ability to write well‑documented code workflows.
Experience teaching data skills across introductory to advanced levels and mentoring students and colleagues.
Demonstrated ability to approach datasets with skepticism and integrate data analysis into storytelling.
