Staff / Principal Backend Engineer
for a growing technology organization that develops advanced software platforms designed to improve online performance, data visibility, and digital optimization for enterprise clients.

This is a direct hire, hybrid role working in San Francisco, CA.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Staff / Principal Backend Engineer will drive the design, development, and optimization of high-performance backend systems supporting large-scale, data-intensive applications. This role blends hands-on engineering with technical leadership, requiring strong coding expertise and deep architectural thinking. We are seeking an individual who codes like a senior individual contributor and thinks like a founder, someone who takes ownership, solves complex problems, and builds scalable, reliable systems in fast-paced environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems and APIs using Python and Django
Lead architectural decisions to support high-throughput, data-intensive workloads and long-term scalability
Optimize database performance, including query tuning, indexing strategies, and data modeling
Develop and manage asynchronous processing systems and task queues at scale
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end product features and improvements
Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and best practice implementation
QUALIFICATIONS:
8+ years of experience developing and deploying Python applications in production environments, with strong expertise in Django REST Framework
Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL, including query optimization, indexing strategies, replication, and partitioning, with the ability to analyze execution plans and manage concurrency
Experience designing and operating Celery-based task queue systems at scale, including worker optimization, monitoring, and failure handling in high-volume environments
Strong API development experience, including REST design, documentation standards, versioning strategies, and maintaining backward compatibility
Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines, with the ability to troubleshoot infrastructure and optimize build processes
Experience implementing observability and monitoring solutions using tools such as Sentry, Datadog, and Grafana to proactively identify and resolve system issues
Demonstrated leadership through code, including mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and contributing to trusted technical decision-making
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This position offers a competitive compensation package including base salary of $200-280k/yr (DOE), bonus potential, and equity plus a comprehensive benefits program.
