Position Overview
We seek an exceptional gastroenterologist or transplant hepatology leader to serve as the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (Gastroenterology) in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM). This is a dynamic academic leadership role focused on advancing the division’s clinical, research, educational, and mission‑aligned programmatic goals.
Division Profile
The Division is one of twelve in the Department of Internal Medicine. The faculty and advanced practice clinicians provide comprehensive gastroenterology and hepatology care across multiple university and community sites, performing over 20,000 endoscopic procedures annually and serving more than 20,000 patients each year.
Key research areas include genetics, epidemiology, cancer biology, molecular diagnostics of pancreatic and esophageal cancers, and inflammatory GI diseases. The division is integrated with the Utah Population Database, the MAGIC consortium, and several grant‑supported research programs, generating more than $1.5 million in research revenue annually.
The division maintains an accredited fellowship program, supports graduate and doctoral training, and collaborates with institutional research training initiatives such as the Physician‑Scientist Training Program, VPCAT Research Scholar Program, and MSCI program.
Responsibilities
Lead the division through trusted governance, honesty, fairness, and transparency.
Foster mentorship, faculty development, and trainee growth.
Motivate and inspire faculty and staff, communicating effectively and listening actively.
Champion excellence across clinical, research, educational, and community missions.
Navigate multidisciplinary environments, building trust with diverse stakeholders.
Create a culture of collaboration and value‑driven quality, efficiency, and stewardship.
Recruit and retain high‑quality clinical and research faculty who reflect the patient population.
Strategize institutional stewardship throughout the University of Utah Health System.
Minimum Qualifications
ABIM board certification in gastroenterology or transplant hepatology.
Academic rank of associate professor or professor.
Eligibility for a Utah medical license.
Preferred Qualifications
National or international research reputation.
Demonstrated clinical leadership.
Progressive administrative experience.
