San Mateo Medical Center's Patient Financial Services Department
is seeking a qualified individual for the position of
Patient Services Supervisor - Hospital Billing and Follow Up .
The Patient
Services Supervisor-Hospital Billing and Follow Up
is responsible for:
Supervising and managing A/R (accounts receivable) follow-up staff.
Ensuring timely and effective insurance and patient account collections.
Monitoring staff productivity, quality, and adherence to departmental goals.
Providing training, coaching, and performance evaluations for team members.
Assigning workloads and prioritizing accounts based on aging and payer guidelines.
Ensuring timely follow-up on unpaid claims with insurance companies, government agencies, and patients.
Reviewing and resolving complex billing issues, denials, and underpayments.
Supervising and analyzing denial trends and implementing corrective actions.
Coordinating with coding, billing, and clinical departments to resolve claim issues and ensure accurate documentation and resubmission of denied claims.
Preparing and reviewing A/R performance, aging, and productivity reports; tracking key performance indicators, such as Days in A/R, denial rate, and cash collection.
Ensuring timely management of provider enrollment for Medicare and Medi-Cal payers.
This
Full-Time, Regular
vacancy is located in South San Francisco, and the successful hire will travel throughout the County for supervision meetings, etc.
The
ideal candidate
will have at least four years of experience in hospital billing and follow up functions; be able to plan, organize, prioritize and supervise the work of hospital follow up effectively; supervise staff conducting patient billing and follow up activities; work independently with minimal supervision using initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines; read, interpret and apply rules, policies and procedures; maintain accurate records and files; organize work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines; communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and demonstrate experience working with diverse client groups and staff.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise and direct patient services office support and business office support staff and activities.
Plan, schedule and assign office support work in admitting, registration and program billing areas.
Participate in the hiring of assigned staff, recommending selection for management approval.
Train assigned staff in patient services office support, business office and County procedures and policies.
Evaluate employee performance, counsel employees, and effectively recommend initial corrective actions and other personnel decisions.
Provide input into the budget and goal setting processes.
Research and compile information from a variety of sources for the completion of forms or the preparation of periodic and special reports.
Provide information to the public or to County staff that requires the use of judgment and the interpretation and application of policies, rules or procedures.
Organize and maintain various patient intake, insurance billing or general files; type draft or finished materials from dictated tapes or brief instructions using a typewriter or word processor; proofread material as required.
Develop, recommend and implement improved operating procedures, forms and work processes.
Oversee and personally perform a variety of office administrative details such as ordering supplies, arranging for the repair of equipment, transmitting information, and keeping reference materials up to date; operate standard office equipment.
Perform complex, technical, difficult and/or specialized office support related to the patient services or business office area.
Provide off hours support as required.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Supervisory principles and practices, including work planning, scheduling, review and evaluation and employee training and corrective action.
Policies, procedures and medical terminology related to the organizational area to which assigned.
Applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
Business office management practices and procedures, including records management and the operation of standard office equipment.
Business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals.
Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Business data processing principles and the use of word processing or computing equipment.
Skill/Ability to:

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Four years of patient services assistant experience providing office support in a medical or clinic setting.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.
The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.
All examinations will be given in the County of San Mateo, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
