Forestry Maintenance Worker
The City of Lake Forest is seeking a motivated, team-oriented Forestry Maintenance Worker to join our nine-person Forestry Section. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career to grow in urban forestry while working with supportive leadership, high-quality equipment, and a team culture rooted in camaraderie and professionalism.
Examples of Duties
Perform tree maintenance activities including pruning, removals, planting, structural support, sidewalk clearing, and routine care
Identify trees and shrubs and assess overall plant health
Support Plant Health Care (PHC) efforts by identifying pests and diseases and assisting with treatment applications
Participate in urban forestry management, including analysis, planning, and implementation of tree care strategies
Safely complete complex tree removals using technical rigging and problem-solving skills
Climb using rope and saddle techniques
Maintain the City's tree inventory using Tree Plotter software
Operate forestry equipment including chippers, aerial lifts, stump grinders, and log loaders
Collaborate with other Public Works divisions through cross-training opportunities
Participate in the City's snow removal program
Work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions
Qualifications
13 years of relevant experience in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field
Experience with tree and shrub identification
Municipal or public sector experience is strongly preferred
A genuine passion for urban forestry, the environment, and outdoor work
Strong teamwork skills and a collaborative, positive approach to work
ISA Certified Arborist preferred; if not currently certified, the City will support preparation and exam costs
Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months (training and exam support provided)
Ability to obtain an Illinois Pesticide Operator License within six months (training and exam support provided)
Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions
Ability to work varied schedules, including weekends and winter operations as needed

Compensation & Benefits
Full salary range: $64,753- $93,368, annual progression based on merit
Insurance: Medical (PPO/HMO), dental, vision
