The City of Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department is hiring Lifeguards and Swim Instructors at Blackberry Farm Park for the 2026 operating season (late April through September). Applicants must show proof of up-to-date Red Cross certificates for Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer prior to the first day of employment.
Lifeguards and Swim Instructors are responsible for the safety and well-being of patrons at the pool as well as for teaching swim lessons. The position requires a fun and positive disposition, excellent customer service and communication skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well with a team.
Lifeguard and Swim Instructor is a seasonal part-time, temporary, non-benefited, and at-will position from late April 2026 through September 2026. It is also limited to no more than 995 hours per fiscal year. Applicants must possess all relevant certifications before the first day of employment.
Essential Duties
Maintain constant and active surveillance of patrons in the facility
Follow the Emergency Action Plan in the event of an emergency
Act immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency
Provides emergency care/treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
Conduct swim lessons for various ages and skill levels
Keep accurate progress records
Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times
Enforce all policies, rules, and regulations
Perform cleaning duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
Maintain a high level of customer service
Perform various maintenance and cleaning duties as directed
Promptly completes and files all required paperwork
Attend bi-weekly scheduled training and staff meetings
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Understand safety precautions in and around the pool
Ability to:
Understand and follow written and oral instructions
Must be responsible, alert, courteous, and punctual
Manage time effectively, show initiative, and work independently
Work and communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and patrons in a team setting
Available to work weekends and evenings
Provide own transportation to and from work
Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 pounds
Education and Experience:
Must be a minimum of 15 years old and possess the current Red Cross certificates listed below
Licenses and Certificates:
Must possess current Red Cross certificates: Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
If you do not have current certifications, you must be able to attend and pass a certification class at Blackberry Farm tentatively scheduled for April 13-17, 2026, OR, with proof of payment, the City will reimburse you at the end of the Blackberry Farm season for the cost of Red Cross lifeguard certification training taken at the location of your choice.
